Frozen foods after a year?!

Question:

Frozen foods after a year?

I'm going through my deep freezer and I'm not sure how long food stays good after it's been frozen.

I have beef, chicken, pork, chorizo and cooked things too like beef stew, roasts and gravy, but some of the food has been in there well over a year...should I throw those out? Or are they still safe?

Answers:

After a few months, most of those foods will suffer from freezer burn. They may have no flavor at all, or taste just so-so. However, they probably won't be 'bad' as in you wouldn't get sick from food infection. When I had a dog, I used the older meats to cook her dog food, so they didn't get tossed. However, whenever I tried cooking something more than 6 months old, it just didn't taste good anymore. Anything cooked, like stews, soups, and such, I would toss out after 4 months in a deep freeze. Once again, the foods lose their taste and probably some of their nutritional value after about 4 months. So, if it were me, I'd probably toss most of it and take the time to label everything from here on; I even try to keep a 'list' of what's in the freezer so I'll actually use it instead of just hope to discover it sometime in the future.
