Can regular milk be substitued for buttermilk in recipes calling for buttermilk?!

Question:

Can regular milk be substitued for buttermilk in recipes calling for buttermilk?

I want to make banana bread and the recipe calls for buttermilk, but I don't have any on hand. Will the bread turn out poorly? If so, I can run to the store and buy some, but I want to get started now.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Answers:

I wouldn't substitute. But there are soooo many recipes available for banana bread or banana nut bread. I'd consider just trying a different recipe.
