Does anyone know how to calibrate a cooking thermometer?!

Question:

Does anyone know how to calibrate a cooking thermometer?

I don't knopw why, but my meat thermometer still reads about 60 degrees, can someone tell me how to get it to read zero again?

Answers: Depending upon the thermometer you have... look under the dial, where the stem comes in... if there is a octagon nut between the dial and the stem, then you can calibrate your therm. Place in a glass of ice water and let sit for about a minute. See how low it goes, if the dial doesn't reach between 32-34 degree's, then using a pair of pliers (needlenose work best, but any pair will do) and turn nut counter clockwise till the needle is in the 32-34 range. If the thermometer is digital, then you may be out of luck, as very few digital therms allow you to calibrate them. But if by chance you have one, you would see a small screw on the back side of the display, that would indicate which direction to turn screw to raise or lower, use the same ice in glass technique to calibrate that as well. Good luck.. take a glass of ice water and place the thermometer in the water if it doesnt read 32* F then there should be a small nut where the base of the thermometer meets the gauge, turn that until it reads 32*F and that should fix your problem. hope this helps! boil plain water, put the end of the thermometer in the water and use pliers to turn the nut just under the top of the thermometer to 212F or 100C. fill a glass with ice cubes and water and put the thermometer in and leave it for 5- 10 minutes. this should bring the temp down to zero.
