I need help with this recipe?

It calls for shaved ham, grated parmesian cheese, red cayenne pepper and puff pastry. You roll the ham , pepper and cheese up in the pastry to make little ham spirals. Well, I couldn't find puff pastry sheets at the store so I got phyllo pastry sheets and they are really thin. Can I still use them in the recipe?


Answers: You can use phyllo with a few changes. Between each layer, brush with a thin layer of melted butter, this will add the richness and more puff. Also, be sure to handle the sheets quickly after they thaw. Keep a cool damp paper towel over the sheets you haven't used yet until you are ready for them. They are likely to tear....if they do, just patch them and keep moving. It should turn out fine if not exactly like your original recipe. Source(s):
Experience Sure you can use them just be careful when managing them, phyllo is just flour and water. puff pastry has butter in it.

you can substitute w/ phyllo, but it might be less rich tasting. add some butter and it should taste the same. They are almost exactly the same thing. Use however many layers you think you need to approximate a puff pastry. It might need less cooking, keep a sharp eye on it.

Just handle them as little as possible so that they stay tender. They get tough really quick.

Good Luck! Yes, but you'll have to be careful about handling them and they won't rise or be quite as "crust-like" as puff pastry. They will have thinner and flakier crusts. You'll need to adjust the baking time as well. I think (not 100% sure) that phllo dough will bake/brown quicker than puff pastry. Keep a CLOSE eye on them as they bake. (Sounds yummy, btw) I think you would have to use a lot of sheets (thick) and i think it would be thin and flaky! But i am curious if it would work! You could try it! Good Luck!!!
