I dont care about anything else I just want to know about the lemon! no, the only thing a lemon is good for is removing the onion smell from your hands after you're done chopping the onion in the first place.

the only means of tearless onion chopping I"m aware of is to either peel and chop them underwater, or hold a lit long fireplace match between your teeth and the smoke will absorb the odoer and smell. If they are slightly frozen that seems to help also. Source(s):
former chef i don't know, but if you stick a peice of bread in your mouth, you won't cry. For some people it does work. Although there are various ways of using a lemon for this purpose, the most common I am aware of is using a lemon wedge, placing it between lip and gum area, and breathing in and out through your mouth while cutting an onion. Supposedly this prevents the gas released from the onion from getting into your eye's. In my kitchens, I have seen it work for maybe 8 out of ten people. I've never heard of lemon, but i know chewing gum works. Chew some gum =) I just watched a cooking show that talked about cutting onions. They said the sharper the knife the less you will cry. It's something about breaking the cells in the onion that releases a chemical that makes you cry. I don't know about lemon but a tooth pick will help I know one simple way. Before cutting you just need to moisten an onion and your knife with cold water right of the faucet. It usually works. Not if you stick the lemons in your eyes.
