Fish is an excellent source of protein and chunky chips absorb less fat than those skinny fast food ones.
Weight Watchers even allows fish suppers, as long as you only have them now and again. You just have to remember to eat healthily as well.
They're only bad for you if you eat them too often! dont fried potatoes contain saturated fats from the oil?...not sure but thats what i thought A lot depends on how often you change the oil. If it is weekely, it is ok, but some places have stale fat.
As for your description, YOUR place sounds good, but not all chip shops do as you do, so many aren't healthy. Um.. They are FRIED in OIL Fish and chips are not bad for you provided you lead an active lifestyle.
As kids in the 1960s, we stuffed ourselves with chips and didn't get fat cos we were always outside playing. SATURATED FAT you can burn the roof of you mouth if they are too hot, i've done that before. Well i guess the only thing that makes them bad is that they are fried... Maybe offering customers grilled fish and salad alternatives could help It sounds as though your fish and chips are less bad than most. Essentially fish and potato are healthy foods, so it really is the preparation that makes them unhealthy.
Too much fat is the answer to your question and it is a fact with most chip shops if not yours! the key word is fried. if you fry any thing it is bad to eat, because of the grease. your place sounds better than most. It is called 'fat'. The thing is, every doctor will tell you, you can eat what you like in moderation. The problem is that kids in high school leave at 1 pm, walk two blocks to the chippy and eat chips every day. That is the problem. I love fish and chips, I might have it once a month, because I know I can treat myself now and again, but eating it all the time is bad for you. Most people will agree, that you can have it as a treat, but not all the time. They are deep fried in oil. Try spraying them and baking them in the oven for the chips and use bread crumbs and bake them for the fish.
That is healthier, takes longer but healthier.
Oh I adore Fish and chips from a chippy, but then again I run marathons so I can indulge once or twice a year! I never heard they were! (?) Unless they are both deepfried in lard and and you eat them every meal....with no veggies or salads...lol! At least I hope they are not! It's not the fish and chips that's bad for you it's the hydrogenated fats that they get cooked in that's bad for you. Because your deep frying them thats it if you didn't use batter and boiled the fish and used oven chips then it would be healthy but you wouldn't have much of a fish shop They are not bad for you. But like everything else you should not eat them every day. A mixed diet throughout the week is far better. I love good old fish and chips, something really special about them. No matter how you fry the oil soaks into the pores of the potatoes resulting in fatty calories which are not healthy.
however fish on its own is very healthy if you avoid batter, as bater is quiet unhealthy on the same grounds as described above. i think that you should start frying in that 'sunseed oil' that walkers crisps are now fried in. its supposed to be loads better for you.
You should look into it, it would be a good business move, think of the advertising opportunities!! you could even make it onto the local news as one of the first fish and chip shops to use healthier cooking methods in the interest of public health.
http://www.walkers-crisps.co.uk/sunseed_... They sound great!..where are you?
I think the "unhealthy" part is the oil and the batter. Some (a lot) of F&C shops re-use the oil time and time again. Sometimes they use animal fat. Hydrogenised fats are present in some batter mixes.
If you/I had fish and chips once a month, in the scheme of things...it's pretty harmless, I would think. The problem is, when it's a staple part of someone's diet..and the people selling it don't share you're commitmment and responsibility to providing a good healthy and natural product. I moved to ireland 7 years ago and the one thing i miss is english fish n chips.A little bit of what you fancy does you good........ if you fried using Rape seed or Olive oil your fish suppers would not be bad for you.but sales would drop due to cost of the oil.a single fish is ok depending on the type of batter used but chips are the killer holding to much fatty ,unhealthy oils Myself personally only buy a single fish now at least once a week as fish is very good you I always get the Haddock fish Its all deep fried!!!!!!!
I will not eat any fried food.
I honestly think traditional fish and chips is quite a revolting meal. I don't like any chips, and I only like steamed fish. Theyre deep fried, so that's why theyre unhealthy.
If you dont smother the fish in batter and fry it then it will be much healthier. Its the high oil content and too many people eat too much of it. I love fish and chips, but if I have them my stomach can hurt really badly afterwards because its too much oil for my sensitive digestive system. However, I attended a 'Food For Thought' group at our local hospital, and they taught us that fish from the chip shop is actually one of the best ways to eat fish! Yes have it cooked with the batter on, but dont eat the batter. Also chunkier cut chips are better for you because there is more potato to suface oily area which means less oil going into you. The hospital nutritionist told us Fish and Chips from the chippy is NOT bad for you as long as you eat it in moderation. If you are trying to lose weight, eat very well, then treat yourself to fish and chips at the end of the month. The positives you feel far outweigh the negatives from the oil you consume. Do a follow up treat of a good walk afterwards too and then Fish and Chips is part of your calorie controlled diet. I think it's great you're trying to be as healthy as possible in your business. But, bottom line, fish and chips is not health food. The body does not do well in the long run on high fat foods.
Fatty foods are addictive. This is for the simple reason we are designed by nature to have a weakness for them, because they were very seldom available earlier in man's history. They provided valuable calories and energy the odd time you could get them. Problem is that today isn't thousands of years ago: there's too much fatty food about, readily available, and the body can't easily recognise that too much fatty food is bad for it.
Again, good on you for doing your best in your business, but it might be worth thinking through what you're selling in the long term. It sounds like you're doing everything you can to prepare the fish and chips the best way possible. Like the others have said, fish and chips aren't bad if they're eaten in moderation. Don't let other people make you feel guilty just because some people can't control themselves and eat fried food too often. It's not your responsibility to monitor what they eat or how often. who knows????
