I just don't understand! I had the flour in an airtight container and they still managed to find a way in!

Thanks a lot for y'alls help! I really appreciate it! They're probably grain weevils. They get in rice, dried pasta and other pantry products, like pancake mix, as well as flour. Sift them out of flour or mixes that are only slightly contaminated. If the ingredient is riddled with weevils toss it.

Many people advise to place your flour in the freezer for several days before using (when you bring it home) to help prevent them.

Some say to put a bay leaf in with your flour to prevent them. I put bay leaves on the shelves of my pantry and in my canisters of flour and rice. I haven't had a problem with those bugs since I started doing that. I hate to tell you this, but the bugs were already there. They are in the wheat when it's ground. There is no way to keep them out. The Dept of food and drugs even has a specification for how many there can be and still be considered fit for human consumption. It's measured in parts per million. Other things in your flour include (but are not limited to) rat feces, animal hair, dirt, lice, roaches, grasshoppers and the occasionaly shedded snake skin (they eat the rats) The only way to be sure of what's NOT in your flour is to grind it yourself, or have it ground by a mill close to your home that you can trust, but the grain must still be cleansed first. It might be "old fashioned" to grind your own corn and make tortillas at home, but doesn't it make sense now? If kept in the fridge you wont get them, they are meal worms, they wont hurt you but obiously i nor you would use it. The eggs are already in there... they just HATCHED.
try not to think about it ----------

no, really.
http://en.allexperts.com/q/food-safety-i... Maybe they were already there! The flour might have been open when you got it... I keep my flour in the fridge. haven't seen a bug yet I put my flour in the freezer for a couple of days and I don't have that problem Fatima35121 told you right. The eggs are present in the flour when you buy it and freezing kills them. I do that anytime I buy flour, rice, oatmeal and Bisquick. A bay leaf is suppose to help but from personal experience, I would recommend freezing. Hope this helps. weavles. I think you put in basil leaves to keep them out.
