Cooking with children.?!

Question:

Cooking with children.?

My nearly 8 year old wants to cook. We made kebabs last week, he loved it. Any ideas what else he could cook? Nothing to complicated obviously not to complicated but not too simple either. Thanks in advance.

Answers: well im a child and i love cooking. i like to bake as its more fun but i also like making bread, meatballs and stuff like that where you use your hands a lot. hope that helps! my 10 yr old son makes cakes and scones to die for, there easy to make and great fun to decorate what about sweets, peppermint creams or coconut ice are good ones. Pasta dishes, or mashed potato - he will love having a go at mashing.

Make a crumble - he can get his fingers and hands in and make a mess.

A Pie so he can roll out the lid and then cut shapes for the top enchiladas are a simple enough thing to make for an 8 year old. as well as alot of pasta dishes. they have pizza kits at the store
cookie dough
bake fish fillets
spagetti or ravioli My 5 year old son makes cupcakes, cakes, cookies,I buy pizza crust and let him make pizza, he also make tacos and sandwichs (of course all with my help ) cakes, cookies, Gingerbread men, jelly with fruit in. Pizza, you can buy the base and add all the toppings. Try making your own hamburgers.. lovely and messy. Pancakes !! My grandkids love doing them and then smothering them in jam, cream, butter, or lemon, and scoffing them! Plus they are soooooooo simple! look thru a kids cookbook and select a few things together. Take him shopping with you to get the ingredients. Scroll down this website for several different recipes:

http://www.google.com/search?q=children+... Personally, I don't think you should limit a child when it comes to cooking. This is a chance to teach him proper knife work, how to handle himself near a stove, how to clean up after himself... etc.

Ask him what he'll like to make or just have him help you with what you're making.

Meatloaf
Cakes
Cookies
Stir Fries
Stews
Soups
Breakfast stuff

Whatever you have the patience for... My daughters love to make "pigs in blankets". We use all beef weinters, wrap a piece of cheese (of your choice--we usually use Kraft American) around it, and then wrap Pillsbury Croissants around both the cheese and the weiner. Then put them in the oven until the croissants are golden brown, I think the directions are for 20 minutes. We make usually 10 of them at a time. They love doing this, and watching the dough rise/brown on the croissants. But I do make a point to tell them not to operate the stove without me there. I am always afraid they will try to make something and accidentally burn down my house.
Hope you find some good ideas, and I admire you for spending time w/ your family.
:-) I don’t there are any limits. How about letting him pick a cookbook at the store or library? Or look at recipes online. Let him figure out what looks good to him and the family is off on a taste adventure. I love tasteofhome.com. Almost all of their recipes are pretty simple and I haven’t been disappointed with anything. My son is 6 and we make just about everything together. He loves to whisk! He also likes to make deviled eggs which is a little odd- but he loves those. And he’s the best helper when assembling items for the slow-cooker and making cookies. I know his future wife/ girlfriend is going to appreciate all he's learned! He could probably cook anything at all as long as he is working with you....there are some things that they can cook alone as long as you are in the room....my grandson has been cooking with me, giving him responsibilities bit by bit since he could sit up on the counter...he is now almost 6 (in 10 days) and cooks all the time with me when I have him...he is most interested and does a great job from mixing to cutting to chopping...I just stay right by his side and am there in a flash if necessary...he also stirs stuff, or sautes on the stove....I do not, however, allow him to go near the stove with any type of boiling water, or anything that could fall over and burn him...that we will save until he is strong and big enough for and that may take a few years more yet. how about pancakes? My children have a kids cookbook. Lots of simple recipes such as cookies, cakes etc. They also then decorate what they've made themselves. They really enjoy it. Your local library should have these books as I've seen them in mine. Well, there are the obvious cakes, cookies etc, but children, especially a sensible 8 year old can be taught to use a sharp knife appropriately and let loose on nearly any recipe with you! Try making veggie soup- pick lots of different veggies chop them up, cook in plenty of stock and season as appropriate. Whizz them up, or leave it chunky and add pasta/ rice for a main meal. research shows that children eat more healthy and more variety of food if they are involved in the preparaation so it's a great thing to encourage your child with. Why not go and pick out a recipe book aimed at kids, many of them are aware that parents want their children to cook more than fairy cakes and cookies now, and have all sorts of simple main meals. Why not buy pizza bases and get him to choose what he wants on it. This is great fun for a play date- provide bowls with an assortment of toppings; sweetcorn, pepper, tuna, etc and let them create! with a blender all sorts of fruits can be made into healthy smoothies for breakfast. He'll love creating a new flavour for the whole family to try! And teaching them to cook creatively means they will be able to cook anything once older without being stuck with a recipe book and a few old faithfuls. Experiment with putting different spices into cookie dough- ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg- which works best? Or choosing a new spice/ herb in the supermarket and use the internet to find out what you can do with it. The possiblilites are endless! pizza, cakes, muffins, pasta, noodles,
