HELP ~ Crockpot Chefs~ HELP !!!?
I am going to make a pork roast in my crock pot
how do I put the cabbage in with it?
I have always steamed my cabbages so I am at a loss as to "when"... because I don't want it too limp lol
I put onions in the crock pot all the time but they come out too limp . my family will eat them,If encouraged. but I don't like them either
can you give me any different ideas?
or any other crock pot recipes? Thanks :)
Answers: Other than in stew I gave up cooking vegs in the crock pot a long time ago. They always end up cooked to death and they are soggy and never have their own flavor any more. They pick up too much of the flavor of the cooking liquid for my taste. Veggies normally go on the bottom of a crock pot, topped with the meat because the meat will cook faster than the veggies. How about cooking just the meat in the crockpot and cooking the onions and cabbage on the stove top separately, and then adding to the crockpot when the meat is cooked? put the cabbage in in quarters about half way through the cooking time for the pork roast. place them on the bottom at that time. you can season them with a bit of ketchup for a nice taste. Keep the cabbage in large chunks and place them over the meat to reduce the amount of direct heat that they get.
I like placing large rings of onions on the bottom so the pork sucks up all that flavour.
And if you don't like a certain thing mushy the last thing you wanna use is a slow cooker!! Lol!. I would actually use saukraut in lieu of cabbage. Add cabbage wedges during the last half of the cooking time and put them on TOP of the meat if you don't want it too limp. Depending on how well u like ur pork roast...?
if u want it to melt in ur mouth.. then start the port roast first..
and cook over night or .. 6-7 hrs.. taste..
add all ur condiments.. salt pepper onions,,etc..
let cook 1 hr..
then add cabbage.. and let cook about 1 hr..
test from time to time..
depending on what time it is and what time u are eating.. u can always turn the temp. on low ..
U need a very large crock pot for this.. if it is a family of 3 or more..
good luck..
