$4 meatball? What would go in it?
Earlier this month an internal audit found that the US Justice Department was spending as much as $4 per meatball when meatballs were served at their meetings. When I make meatballs they usually consist of about 2/3rds of an ounce of meat plus seasoned breadcrumbs, egg, and some other flavors. Question is, what ingredients would you use to make a meatball that is actually worth $4?
Answers: Well I doubt that they use this recipe but I could be wrong.
Im a Chef and I make mine with 50% ground sirloin 25% each ground pork and ground lamb (you want a total weight of 1 to 2 pounds depending on how much you want to make or how big you want the meatballs) I use very little in the way of fillers, however I do use equal parts (half a cup each) of bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese and an egg or two; of course I do add herbs like basil and oregano fresh ground salt and pepper sometimes Ill add some grated nutmeg as well.
Fry them in olive oil (use a deep heavy bottom pan) get a really nice crust on them then to make them really tasty drain out the extra fat and remaining oil from the pan and add a bit of red wine to de-glaze the pan let it cook for few minutes to cook out the alcohol and let it slightly thicken and then add to that a can of crushed italian tomatoes and a nice can of purred italian tomato sauce (use a good brand it will make a difference) add the meat balls and let cook for and hour (do not let the sauce boil a nice simmer is what you want) to let the juices from the meat mix well into the sauce now you could eat this right away or you could wait anywhere from 12 to 24 hours which will make the taste very rich.
Serve by themselves as an appetizer or put over your favorite pasta. depending on the size of course you can put them on a nice italian bread with a bit of sauce some provolone and mozzarella cheese for a great meatball sandwich.
I know this is probably over kill on the question but I was I bored and now Im hungry for some meatballs Im gonna go make me some
Ciao ! sounds like a tasty meatball, where can i get some?...the meatball that is. damn thats some B.S , for 4 a meatball it better have gold in it Maybe some caviar?? Or maybe the meatballs were just made by a gourmet chef and they're not anything special, but they are just supposed to be fancy. idk thats a good question with some expensice ingredient like canada hand picked honey, or hand taked syrup. Maybe all kinds of different meats???
That is alot of money for a meatball, though.... The way the government works is that a department only gets as much money as they need. So, if they're getting $50K a year and only spend $40K this year, that means that they're going to get $40K a year from now on. But, if they're planning on getting new desks or something next year, that means that they're not going to have enough money. So, sometimes they have to run up their expenses so that they keep getting the amount of money that they need. It probably includes the same ingredients as yours. You're just forgetting to include the cost of the bureaucrat government buyers. oh yes government meatballs are quite expensive, so are government screw, bolts and most everything. It would take an ounce of ground sirloin, egg, bread crumbs, seasonings, a couple of govenment bureaucrats, 7.4 miles of red tape and a partridge in a pear tree to make them worth $4 each. Kobe beef and breadcrumbs from an artisan bakery would give you a $4+ meatball. I live in LA, I'm sure it's been done here.
Sad thing is those meatballs were probably the same ones that you can get 5 pounds of at Sam's Club. Kobe beef.
