What is the difference in baking powder and cornstarch?!

Question:

What is the difference in baking powder and cornstarch?

i am making shortbread cookies and it called for cornstarch and all i had was baking powder.......

Answers: Baking powder is a leavening ingredient, that is it causes baked goods to rise. Corn starch is pure starch extracted from corn. Corn starch is used as a coating for fried foods and as a thickening agent in sauces and gravies. How did your shortbread (puffs) taste??? Don't bake much huh?? You mixed up tenses ( i am) present (I had) past(what is) present. Are you baking now? or did you bake already?? Baking powder is a leavener, cornstarch a thickener..
