Can i substitute sour cream with yogurt?!

Question:

Can i substitute sour cream with yogurt?

i want to make chantal's cheesecake from allrecipes but i dont think there is sour cream at my area.can i substitute it with yogurt or should i just forget about that recipe and find another?

Answers: YES YES YES!!!!!! I do this all of the time, if not for taste but for nutrional value. Yogurt is low in fat and calories and honestly taste a whole ton better. I substitute this all of the time. One work of advice, strain it very well. If possible give it a few days to strain as well. How I strain it is I will put cheesecloth or paper towels into one of those fine mesh metal colanders. I will then cover the yogurt with a paper towel, this will help keep it from drying and then put in my fridge until I am ready to use it. This will give you the sour creme consistency....... Good Luck.... Go ahead it will work and taste great. Creme Fraiche might be better, but if you can't get sour cream you aren't really likely to get Creme Fraiche LOL i think it will be okay...do not use nonfat yogurt...the cheesecake will not taste good.

good luck! maybe natural yoghurt. but here is some substitutes for sour cream.

Sour Cream, commercial (for cooking purposes) 8-ounce carton 1 tablespoon lemon juice plus evaporated milk to equal 1 cup
3 tablespoons butter plus 7/8 cup sour milk

1 cup plain yogurt plus 3 tablespoons melted butter

1 cup plain yogurt plus 1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 cup cottage cheese plus 1/4 cup buttermilk plus 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice blended until smooth

Sour Cream, commercial (for topping purposes) 1 cup 1 cup cottage cheese and sugar to taste (a drop or two of vanilla extract may be added for better taste). Blend in blender.

Sour Cream, heavy 1 cup 1/3 cup butter plus 2/3 cup milk

Sour Cream, for dip 1 cup 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt Strain the yogurt first There is three things you could do
if you have unsweetened plain yogurt you can substitute it
it may have more moister in it so watch the amount of liquid you put in it
or you could use the plain yogurt and if you line a strainer with cheese cloth it will let some of the whey out of it
yogurt while it does have that tangy taste to it /it does not have the richness to it
if you want that richness just add 1 to 2 table spoons of butter to one cup of yogurt
so what ever it calls for just use that ratio
if your yogurt has allot of liquid you could still use the cheese cloth idea or just use less liquid
I hope this helps You could but the effects would be different
