What type of apple would be best for carmel apples?!

Question:

What type of apple would be best for carmel apples?

also, i heard that it is difficult to keep the carmel on the apple. does anyone have any input on this?

Answers: I personally think that granny smith is the best. The sourness of the apple goes very well with the sweetness of the caramel. I think it combats the strong flavors of each.

As for the caramel sticking to the apple, these people are correct in saying that the apple should be washed and dried thoroughly before beginning. Use a double boiler if you have one to prevent the carmel from getting to hot and thining out. If you use individual caramels, add a small amount of cream or whole milk to help with the melting process. After you dip the apples, place them on waxed paper to harden. Then you can determine if they need an additional coat. Hope this helps you out. ENJOY! :o) Source(s):
personal experience Washington apples work good Granny smith apples are for cooking... Red delicious are for dunking in water, carmel, ect... Fuji apples are great for caramel apples and are much rounder than red delicious apples so they look better (in my opinion at least). Granny smiths also work well for a tarter apple.

to get the maximum coverage of caramel make sure that the apples have been scrubbed clean and are thoroughly dry before dipping. also make sure that the caramel isn't too hot. granny smith....sometimes apples can be waxy..that's what makes them difficult to coat with the caramel.. wash and dry them very well before beginning your project. good luck. Granny Smith are the best, even though they are great cooking apples as well. Just make sure they are washed and dried thoroughly.
