What Are Capers?!
What Are Capers?
I watch the Food Network religiously!! And they use capers a lot, but I'm not exactly positive on what they ARE and what their flavor is...help me out??
Answers: From what I understand, they're the bud of a Meditteranean bush. They're put into either brine (sort of like pickles) or in salt to store.
They add a flavor kind of similar to a sour pickle. You generally don't use a whole lot of them in a recipe - they could be overwhelming otherwise.
I really love them - we make deviled eggs with them, make a butter sauce with them for fish, etc. They are kind of little sour, bitter, salty little balls. hehe They actually are buds of flowers from a shrub that are picked then brined/pickled. They are comparable, slightly, to green olives. Anything you would use green olives in you could use capers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/capers... swear to god i just asked this guy that question yesterday. too funny...he said they were like these dried pea like thingys, whatever he said they were i didn't care cause it didnt sound like anything i would ever use or eat lol A caper is a bud or berry from a mediteranian bush which is processed in a brine and are used in many Italian and Greek dishes for their unique flavor, similar to a green olive. thier little round green balls used for flavor found near the pickles, thier really salty yet tasty and add zest to ANY meal
really good when paired with chicken breats, lemon juice, and butter :}
