Unsalted butter substitute?!

Question:

Unsalted butter substitute?

I have a cookie recipe that calls for unsalted butter but I don't have any. My son needs cookies for a bake sale at school tomorrow and it is at least a 30 minute drive one way for me to a store where I can buy unsalted butter. If I use regular stick margarine will that be okay? Or can you suggest a substitute?

The recipe iingredients are : 1 box yellow cake mix, 1 cup quick cooking oats, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 2 large eggs and 1 1/2 cups plain M&M's.

Thanks!

Answers: Use the salted butter if you have that. If not the margarine should be fine. You're only talking about 1/4 cup so it's not going to make much difference. Sometimes margarine has too much water and will make cookies too flat, but looking at your ingredient list, it really won't make much difference. I'm sure they will turn out fine. Just use regular butter and a little less salt than the recipe calls for. If it doesn't call for salt, don't worry about it. It won't be salty. It'll be OK. it may give a slightly salty taste but it won't be noticeable to anyone except you. Cut back on the salt and use what ya got and that should be find. I'd taste one when your done and see what you think or let ya son taste one. Wouldn't hurt. The regular stick margarine will be fine. Sounds like they just want to cut out the salt, trying to be healthy maybe. As I didn't see any salt listed in your ingredients
