I know there is filling inside, but the recipe says to roll it as soon as it comes out of the oven, let it cool, then add the filling. I wasn't sure if the towel is supposed to be rolled inside of it or not.

that is why my recipe says to roll it the first time with a small kitchen towel laid out on top.roll the towel up in it while still warm. and let it set for awhileto cool. this is to train it for later so it isnt as likely to break.
then you carfully unroll add your filling and reroll.
good luck><> Most pumpkin rolls that I've seen have a frosting like filling in them. When you roll it up, it sticks to the frosting and stays rolled. You're supposed to spread cream cheese on the pumpkin bread and then roll it Um, you usually have some kind of filling to help it kinda glue together I use a cream cheese filling for mine, I roll the cake part on to foil, then roll it up. and put it in the fridge. Comes out great. Paris -- I assume you are talking about the first time you roll the pumpkin roll to form the roll. In all my years as a baker I never had one to stick enough to damage it. I used a special cloth to roll the cake. sense I have retired. I still make a lemon roll once in a while using a sponge cake. I use parchment paper, butcher paper or just a
large brown grocery bag with the bottom cut out and the handles removed the bag can be separated easly use the inside layer
next to the cake. Spread what ever kind of paper you decide to use on a flat work surface sprinkle medium heavy with granulated sugar dump the cake on the sugar covered paper. Fold the edge of the cake tightly tword the center of cake grasp the paper with both hands and start rolling
making sure you are rolling the cake tightly
when the roll is finished roll the cake in the loose paper let it sit with seam side down to cool. When cool enough to spread the filling unroll cake on the same paper apply filling and reroll the cake as before only when you get to the end this time do not roll the cake in the loose paper, leave it un covered with seam side down. Cake can now be iced or dusted with powdered sugar
And cut in the sizes you desire.
(NOTE) If you want a large roll Start rolling
from the small side of cake --- If you want a
smaller roll start from the long side.
I hope I have helped you jim b
