Where do you find currants?!

Question:

Where do you find currants?

I live in central valley in California. I have seen many recieps for red current jelly or Cassis, but I have never seen or tasted a red, white or black current. Where do they grow?
Also is there any fruit /veggie that you have heard of, seen in recipes that is not available where you are?

Looking for FRESH currants, they are not avail here Fresh currants are ripe around Fourth of July here in Cleveland, OH. I can only suggest you contact some farm markets or the produce managers at your groceries.

My parents had about a dozen red and black currant bushes. We always had to cover them with wide sheets of cheesecloth as they were starting to ripen, so the birds wouldn't get to them first! Once we picked the majority of the ripe ones, we'd leave the cloth off and the birds would have them bushes picked clean by the following day!

If you are able to find them, they're great. No real prep other than to rinse them in water and pick out any bad berries. We always ran the juice thru cheescloth to remove the seeds before making jelly. But we used the whole currant in pies or peach/currant pie.

They're worth the price you'll probably have to pay! They sell them by the raisins. health food stores They are similar to raisins.....
Try a store that sells a lot of different dried fruits, a healthfood store, possibly a bulk foods store.
Look near the raisins in stores.....
Search on line for a store source to purchase.
Most anything is available anywhere these days, in or out of season. One just has to search a little harder sometimes to locate the item you want. Do you have a Trader Joe's near you. They sell dried currants. If you want to make jelly, rehydrate and do it.

I can usually find the fruits and vegetables I want at the grocery or health food stores. It's amazing what you can find if it's available and you know where to look.

Good Luck in your search! Currants, raisins & sultanas are all varieties of dried garpes, they come from various grape growing regions, used along with other dried fruit in baking & preperayion of mixed fruit along with peel & nuts.
Fresh currants eaten fresh or used to make jams & jellies are a soft berry fruit,. Two very different fruit types.
