Can you use oil instead of butter?!

Question:

Can you use oil instead of butter?

i'm trying to make sugar cookies and i don't have any butter but just oil...so can i use it instead of butter? or will it ruin the flavor?

by the way i'm really bad at cooking...the only time i'll make great cookies is when i buy the box in walmart which has everything in it...all i have to do is put eggs and whatever and that'lll be it...but today i'm trying by myself...they always end up bad

Answers: Oil will make them a different texture... and I don't think you use the same amt. of butter/oil ratio. I think shortening is a better substitute or margarine. I (personally) have found that directions/recipes are what they are for a reason, and ever since I started following them exactly, I started making better food/desserts.

My advice: Don't make the cookies if you don't have all the correct ingredients... just my humble opinion. Instead of Butter: Use top quality, cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil, from the first pressing, or flaxseed oil. No. In this instance, the butter adds flavor to the cookies as well as texturing it. You could use vegetable shortening or margarine, but for the best taste you really should use butter.

Don't use any oils, they are chemically different. Butter is stable at room temperature and turns to liquid at high heat. Oils are liquid a room temperature. Just because you can substitute it for frying does not mean you can for baking. Would you put oil on your toast? I would not use oil. I don't think the cookies will set right.
