Toasted sandwich makers?!

Question:

Toasted sandwich makers?

Just to check how these work...you make a nice sandwich and you stick it in one of these machines and it squishes the bread into pulp, then burns it into a crispy crust which then encases the stuff in the sandwich that remains and hasn't been squeezed out in the squishing process. Is this really it and what's the point in all the squishing?

Much better would be some kind of portable mini-oven. Do these exist. I really like warm bread, but lightly toasted, like fresh out of the oven!!

One other thing...Does the stuff between the bread get cooked? I read that you can use tomato as a garnish, tomato between the slices of bread? Surely that's just going to make the biggest mess when squished!!

Surely that's just going to make the biggest mess when squished!! You can cook some things like an egg in the old type. The one I had was quite deep and didn't have that raised section that cuts them diagonally.
I saw a picture of a nice mini oven the other day some where that had elements both top and bottom.
The squishing point is to seal the edges so the filling don't ooze out, but they do anyway. Obviously you don't like the concept of paninis. No, the stuff in the bread does not get "cooked", just heated.

Instead, use your frying pan, heat slowly without any pressure, remember grilled cheese sandwiches? The squishing is what makes the sandwich seals up like a pop-tart, even when you don't use cheese or another ingredient that 'sticks' the sandwich together. Yeah, a toaster oven is a much better choice if you want a presentable melt or just nice warm bread.
