Another food is being tagged as beneficial in warding off cancer.
A researcher in the U.S. says the more tomatoes people eat, the less likely they are to contract a wide range of cancers.

Doctor Edward Giovannucci works at the Harvard School of Public Health. He says it doesn't matter whether the tomatoes are fresh or prepared as sauces or even ketchup.

The key anti-cancer ingredient may be the chemical that gives tomatoes their red colour, lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant, which reacts with so-called "free radicals" and stops them from damaging cells.

Giovannucci cites a study that showed lycopene could protect immune cells from nitric oxide damage. It does an even better job of protecting cells than beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A that is also known to have antioxidant properties.
