Has anyone bought the book Deceptively Delicious? Featured on Oprah?!
Also do you think that the veggies will still keep it's nutritional qualities? I've always heard that cooking vegetables makes them lose some vitamins. What do you think?
Answers: I just saw it on Oprah and thought it was a great idea and yummy one too! You simply add vegetable or fruit purees to what you are cooking so your kids will eat it. It is a deceptive way of making your kids eat their veggies! I don't have kids but often cook for my nephews and nieces when they come over. The recipes sound healthy and delicious that I want to try it for myself too! I just wanted to know if anyone has tried the recipes.

yea, i just saw that segment on Oprah today and thought all the food looked really good, especially the cookies, and brownies!!! I'm looking to lose a few pounds and that seemed like it might help...I'm wondering if i could use baby food puree instead of pureeing the food myself?
I haven't heard of this book, but I'll look for it at my library. I read an article a few years ago about how to add fiber to your family's diet, and one of the recipes it gave was for something they called "Surprise Brownies." They were regular brownies, but had pureed spinach in them. I was sceptical, but made them one night after the kids were in bed and was VERY impressed. The kids didn't ever notice the spinach. You couldn't taste it (or see it, for that matter) at all. I have also made muffins with zucchini in them. They normally won't touch zucchini with a ten-foot pole, but the muffins went quickly.
As for nutrient loss, as far as I know, mostly that happens when you boil things -- the vitamins seep out into the water, which you then throw out. If you're pureeing veggies and fruit, and then pour it all into another dish, I can't see why you would lose anything, unless there is some kind of chemical change when it is heated. Maybe the book will have more details on that subject.
Thanks for the heads up! I'm always looking for ways to have my family eat better.
I just saw Oprah today and I am looking for the book online. I don't have kids either but I don't like vegies all that much and I love all the fatty foods that kids do... I've been wanting a way to eat healthy and I think this is a GREAT one!!!
To answer your question a/b the veggies loosing nutritional qualities... she cooks them by steaming, and I've heard that this is the best was to cook them b/c it allows them to keep almost all of their nutritonal values!
"Steaming vegetables helps preserve the vitamin and mineral content, color, and flavor of the vegetables."
So really this book is great in every way!!! I can't wait to get mine and trick my boyfriend and family into eating veggies! haha
