Funeral Potato survey?!
Answers: Quick survey- anyone here who is not from Utah and has never been to Utah ever heard of funeral potatoes? They're a kind of statewide dish, basically a potato casserole. I know it's more of a local thing (like fry sauce or lime jello with carrots), but I'm wondering if it's spread. For that matter, how far has fry sauce spread? I was in a McDonald's in Paris and they had packets of fry sauce, but it turned out to be mayo. Thoughts?
can't tell you i've ever heard of funeral potatoes, i remember lime jello and carrots. my mom never made it, but people would bring it to pot lucks when i was little. i think that is more of a "generational" thing than a location thing.
as far as fry sauce goes (i am now a fry sauce freak) - i grew up in CA, and had never had fry sauce until i went to meet my husband's parents in ID. we then had to move to NC and they didn't have it there (we had his family mail it to us). we have driven all the way across the country twice and the only place i have have seen it regularly is in the ID - UT upper west areas, but not as far west as seattle! hope that helps.
wow, i never heard of any of the things you mentioned. sorry...
I'm from California, but I'm LDS so I guess that's why I know what funeral potatoes are :)
I'm curious about this! I have no idea, unfortunatly... But I'll be checking back because it never hurts to learn something new. While I'm here though.... lime jell-o with carrots?! That sounds like a bowl full of *ewww* to me. lol. Just my two cents. ;o)
Im from Chicago, never heard of any of those things!!! Not sure abou tthe carrots in jello (yuck=)
I'm from Canada and have never heard of them or for that matter fry sauce or jello with carrots! What are they?
I'm a Calif Gal and never heard of Funeral Potatoes, or Fry Sauce. And I do make Lime Jello with minced celery or finely chopped cabbage. Dot it with a bit of mayo just before eating. Now a ? is the Fry Sauce something you dip something into as in BBQ Sauce, or Teriyaki Sauce??? That would make sense. And for Funeral Potatoes I would think that is a way to prepare the potatoes for potlucks.
JELLO here in the USA is Gelatin flavored and sugared in a box. You mix it with boiling water to dissolve it, and chill until it gets jelly like then you can stir in some fruits or celery or cabbage. Fresh/frozen Pineapple, papaya, will cause it not to firmly gel. It will remain runny. Drained canned fruits cut up if whole work well. A very refreshing side salad in the hot days of summer. That is what it typically is and also can be made with tons of other goodies for a more dessert like dish.
I have often had the jello.
I have not heard or had funeral potatoes, but I'm sure it is a dish taken to the home of the deceased family so they will not have to cook.
Several European countries put mayo on their fries. The fries are bought on the street the way we buy hot dogs here in the USA. The "fry sauce" means a sauce that you put on fries.....hence "fry sauce".
Never heard of funeral potatoes or fry sauce, but the Jello thing, unfortunately is familiar. I have lived in Michigan or Florida all my life.
I was in Utah , and fry sauce was ketchup and Mayo. didnt see the big deal there. I wasn't sure what the craze was, when my friends were getting it.
Just another name for something pretty common, to the masses.
I have never heard of this dish but I just looked it up and got the recipe. It sounds like a great side dish for a grill out party. I live in Ohio and I will definitely be spreading this dish around to friends and family. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The Fry Sauce I had never heard of either, but I also looked it up and it is Delicacy from UTAH, it is also Patented. Here is the link I found the recipe on...
dont know about funeral potatoes but i recall an aunt making jello that had shredded carrots in it. i liked the jello that had pretzles or ice cream in it better.
