Anyone heard/tried grasshopper cakes?!
Answers: Well, not just grasshoppers, mostly creepy crawlies...
Grasshopper cake? It's delicious...chocolate and mint! Here's two versions. You can add creepy crawlies to either. ;)
Grasshopper Cake (easy version)
1 package white cake mix
1 cup water
1/3 cup creme de menthe
1/4 cup Creme de Cacao
1 (12 ounce) jar fudge sauce
12 ounces Cool Whip
1/4 cup creme de menthe, additional
Prepare cake mix according to the directions, except use only 1 cup water and add 1/3 cup creme de menthe and 1/4 cup creme de cacao. Bake in a 9x13-inch pan according to directions on cake mix box. When cool, spread fudge topping over cake. Mix 1/4 cup creme de menthe with Cool Whip and spread over cake. Keep refrigerated.
Grasshopper Cake
4 (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1/2 c. boiling water
1/4 c. sugar
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. salad oil
7 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
7 egg whites
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
FILLING:
1 env. unflavored gelatin
1/4 c. cold water
1/2 c. green creme de menthe
1/3 c. white creme de cacao
2 (2 oz.) env. dessert topping mix
Advance preparation for cake: Blend together first 3 ingredients; cool. Sift together flour and next 3 ingredients. Make a well in center of dry ingredients; add oil, egg yolks, 3/4 cup cold water, and vanilla. Beat very smooth. Stir chocolate mixture into yolk mixture. Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until very stiff peaks form.
Carefully fold chocolate batter into egg whites. Turn into ungreased 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees until done, about 65 minutes. When done, invert pan, cool overnight.
NEXT MORNING: Remove cake from pan; slit crosswise into 3 layers.
Prepare Grasshopper Filling: Spread between cake layers and on top. Chill, uncovered, 1 to 6 hours.
GRASSHOPPER FILLING: Soften 1 envelope unflavored gelatin in 1/4 cup cold water. Heat 1/2 cup green creme de menthe with 1/2 cup white creme de cacao. Add softened gelatin, stir until dissolved. Cool. Prepare 2 (2 oz.) envelopes dessert topping mix, following package directions; fold in gelatin mixture. Chill until mixture mounts, 30 minutes, stirring often.
No I have never heard of a grass hopper cake . I have been baking and cooking for yrs too .

I'm really surprised that so many people have never heard of a grasshopper cake! It's really good (and obviously I mean the mint and chocolate version, not a cake actually made out of insects, as most people apparently think). I don't know how to make your own, but you can buy them frozen at any grocery store, usually for around $5-10. They also make grasshopper icecream and cookies.
I know they are an excellent source protein and are eaten in numerous African countries.
We have a yearly Weird food festival where some of those things are presented to try.
I have never tried any of them.
I have not had grasshopper cakes but I have had cricket cookies.They were made with real crickets if that is the sort of thing you mean.I did not make them they were served at the Toronto Zoo to show insects as a food alternative.They did not taste too bad but were not adictive.
I've heard of people eating those creepy crawly things, but not me! No Way, No How! That's just gross, BIG TIME! YUK!!
