I want to make barbecue chicken in a crock pot. Is it a good idea to have the sauce in there for 4-8 hours?!

Question: Won't the sauce burn? Should I marinate the chicknen in the BBQ sauce before I put it in the crock pot? The only other time I used BBQ sauce as a marinate was with some southern fried chicken.

CROCK POT BARBECUED CHICKEN

1/4 c. water
3 tbsp. catsup
3 tbsp. vinegar
2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. lemon juice
3 tbsp. brown sugar
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. dry mustard
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 (2 1/2 or 3 lb.) chicken

Combine water, catsup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, butter and seasoning in a saucepan; heat to boiling. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Place chicken in the crock pot and pour sauce over it. Cook slowly overnight or on high for 6 to 7 hours. This barbecue sauce can also be used with pork and beef.

And here is a quick recipe from the same website:

SIMPLE, SIMPLE BBQ CHICKEN

1 fryer, cut up
1 (18 oz.) bottle BBQ sauce
1 med. size onion
1 bell pepper
1 (12 oz.) can Coke

Skin the chicken pieces, cut onions into large pieces. Cut bell pepper into large pieces. Put the chicken, onion, bell pepper, BBQ sauce into a deep pan or crock pot. Pour coke, and cook on top of the stove for 45 minutes to 1 hour on medium heat; or cook in crock pot 8 to 10 hours.
Actually, most barbecue sauces are added just before serving.
The sauce will burn if it is too thick, the best thing to do is to add a little chicken broth to the sauce. For instance if you are using 2 cups of sauce then use 1/2 cup of chicken broth. The broth will help boost the flavor of the chicken!!! YummM!!!
it shouldnt burn, if you cook it on the low setting. ive thrown ribs in with a bunch of bbq sauce and it turned out real nice. you shouldnt need to marinate the chicken before hand, the crock pot will do a nice job of flavouring your chicken. you might want to season your chicken before hand, depending on what kind of bbq sauce your using.
gross! put BBQ sauce on the chicken then put it on the grill. huge difference in taste. especially if it's charcoal. yummy
Salt and pepper the chicken first. Add most of the sauce to the crock pot. Hold back about a 1/4. Add about half a bottle of water to the sauce and chicken b/c it will cook down. Cook low and slow. When chicken is fully cooked pull it out with some of the sauce it cooked in but add the remaining held back sauce on top before serving.
you want to let it cook with the chicken for about 2 hours and stir occasionally.
You should wait until its about done and then add the sauce.
