Let some of the batter drip off, then put in skillet.
Cook each slice 1 1/2-2 minutes per side til each side is golden brown.

During the Christmas season I add a pinch of nutmeg
beat a couple eggs in a shallow bowl. Add cinnamon (a little if you're not a big fan, more if you love it). Add some milk to thin it out a bit. dip your bread (thick sliced is better, any will do) into the mix on both sides. fry it in a pan or on a skillet. cook both sides. butter and add syrup or powdered sugar. good stuff and simple. i don't measure, just do it all by feel.

Heat butter in heavy skillet over medium-low heat
loads of recipes here (link) but my favorite is dead simple:
cheap white bread, make into jam sandwiches with strawberry jam, whisk a bit of milk and an egg don't measure it just make sure it is a bit runny, put the jam sandwich in the milk pop into a hot pan with a bit of sunflower oil , fry until golden. we used to call this poor knights pudding as kids
eggy bread ( french toast) as above only with one slice bread and no jam, hmmm i am hungry now!
enjoy
Everyone Raves about mine and it is so easy. There is a trick to WOW french toast and I will share it.
VERY HOT FLAT SKILLET (regular skillet works ok too)
Eggs is what makes it good so dont put but about 2 teaspoons of milk into the eggs...I usually use 5 large eggs....add about 1 tablespoon sugar...and 1tsp vanilla Whisk all together and QUICKLY dip your bread into egg mix and directly to HOT HOT pan...
I sprinkle the up side with a little cinnamon before i flip it. and sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving. You can use any bread you desire. HOT SKILLET MORE EGGS LESS LIQUID...and dont let your eggs sit too long..practice makes perfect
2 egg
1/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon flavored syurp
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
dash nutmeg
beat the eggs with the water it will make the eggs fluffyer
add the flavor of your choice and the cinnamon and nutmeg
dip the bread and cook till brown .
French Toast:
6 thick slices bread
2 eggs
2/3 cup milk
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
salt to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Beat together egg, milk desired spices and vanilla.
2. Heat a highly oiled griddle of skillet over medium-high
flame.
3. Dunk each slice of bread in egg mixture, soaking both
side. Place in fan, and cook on both side until golden.
Serve hot.
Reminder: Make sure the pan is completely hot before
fying, bcoz otherwise it sticks bad and you
end up with a mess in your hands.
all of your answers here are great!!! but, you said simple...i have used (with success) egg nog in the can and only added nutmeg and cinnamon before i dipped "Texas Toast" bread in...it is SO easy this way and my family hasn't complained yet.
