Has anyone ever sauteed or pan fried apples before?!
I read in a book not too long ago about pan-frying them up with some onions, and doing a caramelizing thing with them, but there was no set recipe for how to do it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Answers: I have some apples I got at an orchard, and I'm trying to think of new ways to cook them. I have no Bisquick, so a cobbler is out of the question, and no pie crusts, so pie is also out of the question.

This is excellent with pork chops or kielbasa
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 granny smith apples -- peeled, cored and cut into 6 wedges
2 stems fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons butter
3 large white onions -- peeled and sliced
kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper -- to taste
Directions:
Heat half the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and add the apples and then one stem of thyme and one bay leaf.
Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are golden brown but not mushy, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and throw away the thyme and bay leaf.
In another skillet over medium-high heat, add the remaining olive oil, the butter and the onions, then the remaining thyme and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium low and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are soft and golden brown, 20 to 30 minutes. Remove from heat and throw away the thyme and bay leaf.
If you can't make a cobbler without buying a box of Bisquick, and you can't make pie without buying crusts, it would appear that cooking the apples in any way would be *way* beyond your capabilities.
I've never pan fried apples before, so no thoughts there... but you don't need bisquick to make a cobbler or an apple crisp! I often make mine from scratch - it's very simple! Recipes for this can be found at www.allrecipes.com
In addition to this, how about a baked apple? Simple and delicious... Here's what you need to do:
Core the apple, leaving the entire apple in tact. Peel the top half of the apple. Inside the "hole" of the apple, put a teaspoon of butter, packed brown sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle with a tablespoon of water. Bake (or microwave) the apple in a small pan or bowl until it's soft all the way through and the "sauce" has melted. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Enjoy!
Being a former chef you can use them with pork chops or roasts, I use to saute them and the use a french apple brandy, cream and even some coarse ground black pepper to make a sauce.
Even making Applesauce, Chutneys, Apple butter and you can cook them and then freeze them for a future dessert, then it will cook faster.
You can either slice or cube them, the only thing is to use a bit of lemon juice and sugar either white or brown, for meat dishes at dash of maple syrup is a nice touch.
yeah you can pan fry em. but just use a little butter. but itll be like a dessert. heres my version of what you could do. peel and slice the apples or chop just however you want them. melt some butter in a pan then add the apples to it. carmelization is the cookin of the fruits natural sugars, so when it said to carmelize it means to just brown them. keep the heat on medium tho so u dont burn them. cook them as long as u want ( crispy - really soft) i like mine soft and heated through but with still a good crisp to them. before their done cooking add some brown sugar & cinnamon or whatever youd like and allow the flavors to combine. keep in mind that the apples will release their juices but dont get rid of it let it cook with the apples it just adds more flavor and will be like one big dessert sauce. but once its to the desired cookin reaches that u want pull it off the heat and chow down. you could eat with icecream too just to sweeten up even more. if you go to foodnetwork.com look up some recipes on there. that site is loaded with stuff. hope i helped.
I have never sauteed or pan fried apples, but I think it would work.
It would be kind of like the fried apples they serve over ice cream.
I have pan fried or sauteed bananas in margarine and brown sugar. My girls liked that alot!
try breading them and baking them.
cut the apples into slices
dip them in melted butter
them dip them into a flour and cinnimon/sugar mix
set them on a greased tray and bake for about 10-15 minutes at 350 (depending on the thickness of the slices.
very good!
1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 dash cloves
1 dash allspice
1 1/2 cups water
4 medium cooking apples (peeled and sliced)
pouring cream (whipping cream) or custard, to serve
In 10 inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Stir in sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, cloves and allspice.
Blend in water.
Arrange apples over sauce.
Cover and cook over medium heat, spooning sauce over apples until apples are tender and sauce is thick.
Serve in 4 pudding bowls, passing pouring cream or custard separately.
FRIED APPLES & ONIONS
1/2 lb. Bacon, sliced (Salt pork may be substituted)
2 lb. Onions
2 lb. tart Apples, chopped
2 tbsp. Sugar, brown
Fry bacon slices in 12″ skillet until brown and crisp. Set aside on a warm serving platter. While meat is frying, peel onions, as thin as possible. Core apples and cut crosswise in circles about 1/4″ thick. Do not peel the apples unless skins are tough or scarred. Drain all but 1 tbsp. fat from skillet, then add onion slices. Cook over medium-high heat about 3 minutes. Cover with apple slices in an even layer. Sprinkle brown sugar over all, cover skillet, & cook until tender, a few minutes more. Stir only to prevent scorching. Remove to warm plate with bacon slices.
Note: Apples'n'onions are great with fried potatoes for breakfast.
Little House Cookbook.
I'm for the baked apples, but I stuff mincemeat in the hole where the core was. I believe the syrup I make to cook them is just brown sugar melted and some butter and a bit of water. Use this to baste them as they cook. A big dollop of whipped cream or some ice cream and you are all set.
PS Paul is an idiot.
