Substituting apples for raisins and cherries in a cake?!

Question: Advice from good cooks, please: I made a fruit cake which was lovely. I think that the cake would be nice made with apples instead of the raisins and cherries in the recipe. Could I just substitute the same amount of apples, or would I need to adjust the amount of apples, or other ingredients to have it turn out ok? Thanks.

I have done this and it works fine using the same amount.
I think substituting the same amount, chopped, would be great. You might think about also adding walnuts with the apples.
