COLD OVEN POUND CAKE
1/2 pound butter (2 sticks)
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 pint whipping cream
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add vanilla. Now add flour and cream alternately in four parts, blending each time. Grease and flour a large tube pan and pour in batter. Place in a cold oven. Turn oven to 325 degrees and cook for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Remove from pan while still warm.

3 sticks margarine or 1 1/2 cups margarine (not butter)
3 cups granulated sugar
5 large eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Powdered sugar for sprinkling (optional)
Grease and flour angel food tube pan, Bundt pan, or a 9 x 13 x 2-inch baking pan.
Cream margarine and sugar. Beat it and beat it and beat it ... until it is really creamy and light colored.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add flour, baking powder and salt gradually to mixture. Then add water and vanilla last. Put in prepared pan and place into cold oven. Turn on oven to 350*F (175*C).
Bake about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Test with wire or wooden pick after 1 hour, especially if you are using a 9 x1 3 x 2-inch pan.
If you will be taking it out of the pan, let cool only 5 to 10 minutes in the pan, before removing. The brown edge of cake is so good icing isn't needed. Powdered sugar for looks is optional
Makes 12 servings.
Variations: Instead of water and vanilla; add orange juice and teaspoon of lemon extract. Or, add 1/2 cup drained crushed pineapple. Or, 1/2 cup applesauce. Or, finely chopped nuts to add nut flavor.

DIRECTIONS
Do not preheat oven. Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the margarine, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour alternately with the milk. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Place cake in cold oven, then set the temperature to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Bake for 90 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Cream butter (make sure it is somewhat softened, not rock hard out of the refrigerator) and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time;beat well after each addition. Add flour slowly and beat 2 to 3 minutes. Add extracts, and beat briefly to blend in. Pour into a greased and floured tube pan. Place in a COLD oven, then set heat to 300*F.. Bake 1 hour and 30 to 45 minutes. Cool on wire rack.
