Place 1lb granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon golden syrup, 2oz butter, 1/4 pint water and 2teas white wine vinegar into a heavy based saucepan and heat gently til the sugar has dissolved. boil rapidly for 5mins until a little of the mixture dropped into cold water forms hard but not brittle threads. (280f/140c). Push wooden sticks into your apples and dip into toffee mix. swirl around to remove any excess then place on a buttered tin or non-stick baking paper to set. If toffee hardens too quickly, gently re-heat to soften.
Here is one for you to try:

Traditional Toffee Apples

Ingredients:
2 pounds (1 kilo or 5 cups) demerara (light brown) sugar
Nut of butter
1 small teaspoon vinegar
1 desertspoon golden syrup (or light corn syrup)
Half cup water
Sticks for holding the toffee apples (ice lolly sticks do at a pinch)

Method:
Stir together the sugar, vinegar, syrup and water and heat until boiling, stirring continuously. Continue on a slow boil for 5/7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Insert the stick into the core of each apple and dip the apples into the mixture. Place on a greased tray, with the sticks in the air, until dry.

If you have a Save-On Foods or a Safeway nearby, they probably sell toffee or caramel apple dip that you can just warm up and use.

Unless you've got your heart set on a home-made sauce.
I don't have a recipe... Hayden Christensen, however, does. He's the beautiful guy who played Aniken Skywalker in Star Wars episodes 2 and 3. If you search Hayden Christensen on Youtube the video you need is the first one, the Blue Peter one. He makes homemade toffee apples.

I wouldn't mind a bite of his toffee apple.
Keep it simple: 1/4 pt water and 1lb of sugar and red food colouring if you want it to be red.

Cook the sugar and when it's converted to caramel just dip the apples and place in a greased tray or greaseproof paper.
