Yes, yeast has an expiration date. If you use "old" yeast, your dough won'r rise like it should.

Cream of tartar can be used to stabilize egg whites if you're whipping them or in a cookie dough with baking soda, it acts as a leavening agent instead of baking powder.

The best cake has to be White Chocolate cake with a Caramel frosting that my great aunt first made for us over 50 years ago. Hadn't had it in years, but then found my mother had her aunt's recipe...it was as good as I remembered. I now make it annually for my 87 year old mother's b-day.
Yes, yeast has an expiration date.
The best cake I've ever made I can't find on Betty Crocker's website and I don't have the book but the classic Betty Crocker cookbook has this chocolate chip cake with homemade butterscotch in the middle of two vanilla cakes with melty chocolate chips then you melted a ton of dark chocolate and poured it over the whole thing and it hardened.
Mmmmmmmmmm.
1. It sure does, but it takes a while to go bad before it becomes inactive. I know a trick that works on baking soda to see if it's still good and active. I dont know if it applys to yeast (it probably doesnt), but add a spoonful of it into a cup of vineger and see if it fizzes.
2. Cream of tartar makes icing harden. Like a royal icing for sugar cookies.
3. The most awesome cake was a chocolate cake I made with a melted candy bar center with oreo crumbs on top. It was fantastic. :]
Well...questions 1 and 2 have been answered for you....

In answer to #3, the best cake I make or have tasted is what my grandmother called, "Scotch Cake"...has no scotch in it, so I don't know where the name came from. It is a very dense chocolate cake almost brownie like with a thick chocolate icing that has coconut and pecans in it. It's the best!
A Tiramisu is always brilliant
