Ask Rachel Ray.
Heat 1 tablespoon Apricot Jam with 2 tablespoons Water - Apricot Glaze
my mother was a professional cake icer, and from what i remember she used to use apricot glaze for sticking things like icing and marzipan to the cake.

i belive it was just smooth apricot jam (preserve, if u are from the USA), mixed with a very small amount of warm water.

i think your teacher should have given u better instructions !
a simple way to do it is if u have 1 1/4 cups apricot preserves or jam just add 2 tablespoons golden rum or water then its a glaze
They will tell you on your course how to make things like that. It's basic really , 1 tablespoon of apricot jam and let it down to a brushable consistency with warm water.
Apricot Glaze

Ideal for preparing a cake for fondant or for crumb-coating cakes before icing.
Ingredients:

* 1 cup apricot preserves

Heat preserves to boiling, strain. Brush on cake while still hot. Let dry. Glaze will dry to a hard finish in 15 minutes or less.

Covers a 10 x 4 in. cake.

I use this all the time on wedding cakes and birthday cakes, except when I'm making a cake for Mom... she hates apricot!
Warm some apricot jam , because they are no seeds in this jam it is ideal for the purpose .
Here is my recipe for apricot glaze Glaze is defined as a thin, liquid, sweet coating. for fruit or cakes topped with fruit.
1 cup apple juice
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 cup apricot jam.
Heat the above ingredients that have been combined in a saucepan and stir constantly on medium heat until thickened. The resulting liquid is a glaze. More juice can be added to thin out the glaze.

here is another recipe from http://www.joyofbaking.com
1/2 cup (125 grams) apricot jam or preserves
1 tablespoon Grand Marnier or water (can also use other liqueurs)
Note: Grand Marnier is an orange liqueur
Just buy a jar of apricot jam and add a tablespoon of water for every 125g of jam. Heat in a pan until it become quite fluid, strain and the liquid left is your glaze. Couldn't be simpler.
a apricot glaze or the way i make it is one jar of apricot preserves and 3 tbsp of your favorite liqueor or juice if u want to thin it out in a sauce pan and cook it over low heat and brush it over the cake slices when cool or u can use it slightly warm and it is sooooooooooo good...
place apricot jam into a small saucepan add some pale sherry and some water bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes {,be careful not to catch the jam on the heat}until the alcohol has been cooked off, then remove from the heat and strain, brush the cake with this mixture when its still hot that way you will not put too much on,you can use marmalade in the same way, this will store in the fridge making sure that there are no crumbs in the jam this might go mouldy over time.[instead of brushing the glaze on the cake try using a palette knife i find this better.

That sounds so...good! I like the smuckers apricot-pineapple jam on toast, try that unless you have to make it yourself from scratch. I'd go with the jam from the groceries store.
