When baking do you really need to follow the recipe word for word?!

Question: Or does it really matter if you add the ingredients in the wrong order, or you don't beat the sugar and butter until lemon colored?

Answers: Or does it really matter if you add the ingredients in the wrong order, or you don't beat the sugar and butter until lemon colored?

Well, it depends on what you're making and what consistency you want it to come out. Generally, they tell you a specific order because it needs to be more or less watery, or retain a shape better, etc. etc. If you don't beat the sugar and butter until lemon colored, you're going to wind up with chunks of butter and patches of sugar, and the taste won't come out nicely blended. If you don't add the salt and the baking soda/powder to the flower, it won't rise like you need it to. If you put in the dry ingredients first and then the wet, it will be more firm. If you do wet first and then dry, it will be a little more watery. You need to think about what ingredients you're using, how you're combining them, and whether or not they'd be better in clumps or chunks or blended smoothly throughout the recipe. You can substitute some items, but again, that depends on what you're making.

It really depends on what you're making. Don't be afraid to add your own little twist to a recipe though!

i'd say that baking is the most important time to follow directions to a tee. it is so easy to screw up with baking.

In baking it could matter a great deal.

mix all dry stuff together and add it to the wet, and yes, when baking everything matters to come out correctly

It depends on the recipe.

there are certain modifications that are acceptable, but be mindful of chemical reactions that must be done in sequence

Depends. If there's some kind of odd direction, make sure you do it because it's in there for a reason.

normally the order doesn't matter as long as you get the correct amount of the item

I have never followed the recipe word for word, and although things aren't always picture perfect, they generally taste great!

not word for word but not doing the total opposite either.

yes

no of corse not if its somthing you relly like you can but sometimes you have to just impravise

for some reason, when baking , its best to follow directions!! order of ingredients, amounts, etc. in cooking- not so much

yes, it does matter. some chemical reactions need to occur from your procedures and failure to follow them will result in a less than desired product. For example, it may not rise as high as needed, it may not be as moist as desired, it may go flat.

I usually do not. I add more or less as desired to taste.

Yes, it all matters. The steps must be done in the correct order for the proper reactions between all the ingredients to take place. Baking is a lot like chemistry, only with edible substances.

i dont.. you got to add your special something in it

if you don't beat the sugar and butter correctly, they're not mixed and you'll have lumps or extra surprises in your baking...

short answer: if you want it to turn out right, follow the directions

If you want it to come out exactly as good as it is, follow every detail precisely

yes and no
You need to gain a confidence in baking for you to get the feel for it. Don't be afraid to try.

unfortunately in baking, it is a chemistry experiment. If you do not follow the directions exactly you will not end up with the same results. It may not effect taste but say you make it again, it will be different

I love cooking and seldom follow recipies.

You need to make sure that the acids and levening agents are correct but you can fudge and be creative on other parts of the recipie. I make a killer cornbread, awesome chocolate chip cookies and wonderful speghetti sauce and have strayed so far from convention, and yet they are all hits. Practice and love what you do. That's it cooking is an art and it should be pleasureable. :)

generally speaking, you do not need to follow a recipe word for word. however, when mixing ingredients in, it's usually best to the follow the recipe as there as specific reasons for mixing two things together before mixing it with the rest, for example: pumpkin pie. if you don't mix the spices together before adding the egg and pie filling, the spices won't evenly distribute...

Usually you can do what you like. Recipes can be adapted, and I do that all the time. I leave out ingredients I don't like and put in ingredients I like, for example. Go for it.

Only if you want it to turn out good.

Ok.... In terms of order, it won't really matter that much DEPENDING on what it is. When you beat the sugar and butter, the main thing is to get them mixed together. It just makes the process easier. In terms of MEASURING, the answer is yes. Its easier to ADD than SUBTRACT.

no not really. try to make it suitable for your own taste.

u don't need to follow it word for word, but i reccommend following it the first time, so u can get the hang of it, and then make ur own changes. it won't matter if u totally mess up the order of ingredients, but try to kee it simple.

Believe it or not you will have to follow the recipe i.e. using baking powder or baking soda.... just stick to the ingredients... Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania

it doesn't matter what order you do them in generally. however, you need to mix the dry inredients before adding the wet. also, you do have to mix things together properly otherwise you may end up with clumps of one ingredient.
