Making deepfried onion rings?!

Question: Hi, I'm a terrible cook, let's get that out there.

I wanna make some deep fried onion rings, but we're out of flour! Are there any substitutes for batter? And how is onion rings + hot oil? I made french fries before just straight deep frying them, can onions work the same way? Thanks so much!

You can use pancake batter, just make it thicker then you would for pancakes. And yes, you deep fry them the same as you do french fries.

I guess I misread your question. If you just put uncoated onions in the fryer, expect to only get fried onions. They will NOT be like onion rings at all. Onions are soft after cooking, it is the coating that gives them their crunch.

yeah if u throw the onion rings in just oil they will like the potatoes did just fry up and become crunchy

no, you need batter for onion rings.
do you have any type of cake mix, pancake batter or try dipping the onion in egg and rolling in in itialian seasoned bread crumbs as a coating

try foodnetwork.com...they have variations of everything!!!!!

No onions need to have some type of batter on them or they'll be gross. You could try foodnetwork.com they have lots of good recipies. You could maybe try bread crumbs or corn meal but I'm not sure how well that would work.

i don't think there is a sub for flour....just bye some more....and yeah it works the same with onion and frnech fries

you need flour, onion ring + hot oil is not the same as french fries, if you have a cake batter use it instead of flour, I have no idea how it will turn out but it might be good?
here is a good recipe for whenever you have flour

"These are very delicate and the best I have had. My ex was a fanatic when it came to onion rings, and thought this recipe to be the best he ever had. I have also made other veggies in this batter. It can be refrigerated or frozen, then reheated in oven or microwave. Carbonated water can be substituted for beer in this recipe."

INGREDIENTS:
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup beer 1 pinch salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
4 onions, peeled and sliced into
rings

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large, deep skillet, heat oil to 365 degrees F (180 degrees C).
2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, beer, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth. Dredge onion slices in the batter, until evenly coated. Deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Hi. I am sure you can however it is the batter that makes them so yummy..try corn flakes, cornmeal, or even oatmeal..anything to coat them..You never know you make discover something great!!

Yes you deep fry them like you would french fries... I really don't think you can substitute anything for the flour though.... You could try Bisquick

Ok lets think do you have some pancake batter or mix or some Bisquick, that will work. Do you have any fish fry mix, that will work. Any hush puppy mix, that will work. How about cake flour(NOT CAKE MIX), that will work. Maybe even dried potato flakes (not sure but you could try one).

Next time you make them and have some flour try these:

KICK A%# ONION RINGS

1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons pepper
1 teaspoon salt
2 large sweet onions, such as vidalia
vegetable oil (enough so onions are covered in oil for frying)
salt

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
Combine the buttermilk, hot pepper sauce and sugar in a medium bowl until the sugar dissolves.
Combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, Old Bay, salt and pepper in a shallow baking dish.
Peel and cut the onions into 1/4-inch-thick slices.
Separate the onion slices into rings and towel dry.
Dip the rings in the buttermilk and shake off the excess liquid.
Dredge the rings in the flour mixture, shake off the excess.
Meanwhile, heat the oil to 400 degrees over medium-high heat in a large heavy pan.
Add the onions to form a single layer on the oil's surface and cook until golden brown, no more than 3 minutes.
Using tongs, transfer the onions to the paper towel-lined plate.
Let stand 2 minutes to drain, then carefully transfer to the rack in the warm oven.
Repeat till all are fried.
Season with salt!
Serve!

The starch in the potato makes it possible not to batter frech fries. This will not work for onions. With no flour try using the onions first dipped in milk then bread crumbs if you have that. Salt to taste and also if you have some ranch dressing for dipping then that will make it taste very good. Hope you like it.
