Can I substitute another spice for cardamon?!

Question: I have a recipe that calls for 1 tsp. of cardamon and I don't have any. Is there something else that I can use? What exactly is cardamon, anyway?

nutmeg, some recipes would list allspice and cinnamon as a substitute for cardamom .
Cardamom is the ground seed of a tropical fruit in the ginger family known as Elettaria cardamomum. The seeds are found in ovalshaped fruit pods that are between 1/4 and 1inch long.

The name cardamom is used for herbs within two genera of the ginger family, cardamom is cultivated in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Mexico, Thailand and Central America.

Depending on what you're making you could probably substitute cinnamon, nutmeg or allspice.

Cardamom is what I'd call a warm spice like cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger. Spicy without being "hot". It is a seed pod from a tree which grows in tropical regions. While fairly expensive a little goes a long way. Better bakeries use it in their danishes and breakfast pastries. You might also find it in some Indian curry dishes. If you are cooking a savory dish substitute ginger or a pinch of nutmeg. Something sweeter Cinnamon will be fine. The dish will probably be fine w/out it .
