Cake flour?!

Question: Okay, I'm making a chocolate cake for my dad's birthday tomorrow. and I would like to know, it said on of the ingredients was sifted cake flour. I don't have a sifter, or anything, so I went to the store and I get Pre Sifted self rising flour. is this what the recipe means? it didnt say what kind of flour, it just said cake flour. I'm making this from scratch btw. and is this chocolate cake, like the cake part, not the frosting is it gonna turn out like a yellow cake or chocolatye, then i put chocolate frosting on it? i know i should look at the recipe but it doesnt say and it doesnt have a picture.

excuse me for sounding like i have no knowledge of cooking cuz i dont. lol im 13 and i have no mom, and my dad doesnt know anything. so yeah.

Sorry those other two answers are wrong. Self rising flour has extra ingrediants and it is different.

Cake flour is a different type of flour not just sifted. It makes a finer grained product that is very nice.
You can use all purpose flour and it will work but your cake will not be as finely textured.
Self raising flour has some leavening (baking soda, baking powder) in it and it will change your recipe. DO NOT use self raising flour instead unless you read and follow special instructions for substitution. You may need less salt or soda.

Always when it says sifted don't worry about that. You can safely ignore instructions to sift just make sure there are no huge lumps. Just measure it out.
So sifted/non sifted flour doesn't matter.
Cake or all purpose will work.
Self raising has leavening ingrediants so it changes your recipe.

For a special day, special cake I would try to use the cake flour because it makes a very nice cake. German chocolate cake is an example of a very good cake made with cake flour.

well cake flour is just flour thats been sifted to make your cake lighter and fluffier.
so if the flour you bought isn't all compacted already, then it should work :)
and if you have a colander, you can sift it with that

The flour you got will do fine!! My hat goes off to you for being so considerate and thinking of your dad...most teenagers your age do not.......keep on sharing the goodness in your heart....it will take you far in this life!!

To help you with your problem, firstly cake flour is milled from soft white flour and is lower in gluten and higher in starch content and therefore creates a delicate, velvety texture in cakes and cookies. For your information 1 cup of cake flour, the substitution is 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons all-purpose (plain) flour. You can also substitute 3/4 cup all-purpose flour plus 2 tablespoons cornstarch for every 1 cup of cake flour called for in a recipe. As for sifting the flour, all you need is to buy a sieve from shops that sell baking supplies or small kitchen equipment.

Since you have already bought pre-sifted self-raising flour, it is alright to use it in your recipe. The only difference is that for every cup it has 1 teaspoon baking powder and a pinch of salt. That means your cake will turn out fluffier than otherwise.

Your mixture will be a yellow cake recipe if there is no chocolate or cocoa powder added to it. In any case, it will still turn out nice especially when it is spread with chocolate fudge or chocolate frosting. In case you do not have a good frosting, you might want to google for some nice recipes.

Hope your cake turns out well and Happy Birthday to your dad!

Your cake will come out chocolate if one of the ingredients is either cocoa or chocolate. If not, it will come out yellow. As for the flour, self rising is not exactly the same as cake flour, but it will work fine. Just follow the directions and you will have a great cake. By the way, you are a real sweetie for making dad a cake for his birthday!

Ok go back to the store and pick up betty crocker cake mix or Dukin Hines cake mix and chocolate frosting. Making a cake from scratch is very hard.
