What is the best type of small apple to use when baking?!
Answers: WE always just went to the cider mill and got the bags of red apples, not red delicous, those are narly, but maybe a nice macintosh or even pink lady, they are firm, and have a really nice sweet flavor!!
Crab apple
I just did an apple pie and applesauce with an Ambrosia Apple. It was delicious.
Granny Smith are good also. Granny Smith gives you a tartness with the sweet. Golden Delicious, Rome Beauty's and Fuji apples are also good for baking.
You don't want one that is too sweet so I would suggest Granny Smith, nice with a drizzle of maple syrup.
I like Granny Smith, Jonathan, Fuji, and Winesap apples for baking.
growing up on an apple orchard, knowing most of the types, my favorite both for eating and baking is cortland. crisp, a little sweet, a little tart, crunchy..
Cox apples are the best for cooking and they're small.
went to a local orchard recently. they had jonagold, macoun and mutzu, none of which i ever heard of. but -- we had a mix of the 3, and they sure did make nice applie pies !!!! just made another one yesterday at the request of my family.
ps -- we live in the northeast, which may have to do with the varieties that were available....
These are apples I think dont make the best pie, Red delicious, fuji, and yes, Granny Smith--in my book, those apples are too sour. Use yellow delicious, rome, gala or any of the soft, sweeter apples.
