To those who make their own home-made slaw, what is your favorite bottled dressing or recipe?!

Question: I'm going to "cheat" with a bag of precut veggies, but I would like either a recipe or a brand name of some really good, tried and true cole slaw dressing. (Our all-time favorite fast-food slaw is KFC's, but with all the stomach bugs and flu that starts making the rounds this time of year, we generally try not to eat out.)

Thank you!

Green Slaw (coleslaw)
...

3 cups finely shredded crisp green cabbage
1/4 cup minced onion
1 carrot, shredded fine, optional for a little color

For Dressing:

1/3 cup mayonnaise
1 Tbsp. vinegar
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. celery seed

Put cabbage and onion in a bowl.

Prepare dressing with remaining ingredients. Stir well to dissolve sugar. Pour over cabbage; toss lightly. Chill. Yield: 6 servings

ape,s recipe is great, if you want it a little more like KFC then also add about two tablespoons of sour cream.

KFC has the best slaw for a take out place.

i make my own slaw dressing: 2 tbsp miracle whip or mayo

1 tsp dijon mustard, 1tbsp sugar, and 1tsp of milk for creamy slaw..

mix all them together and u may need to adjust the mayo, or milk for the slaw but it is delicious and the longer it sits in the fridge the better it tastes...

KFC Recipe

8 cups finely chopped cabbage (about 1 head)
1/4 cup shredded carrot (1 medium carrot)
2 tablespoons minced onion
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

1. Be sure cabbage and carrots are chopped up into very fine pieces
(about the size of rice).
2. Combine the sugar, salt, pepper, milk, mayonnaise, buttermilk,
vinegar, and lemon juice in a large bowl and beat until smooth.
3. Add the cabbage, carrots, and onion, and mix well.
4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
Serves 10-12.

shred cabbage

cup mayonnaise
a little milk to make a smooth consistency
Tbsp of vinegar
about a tsp of sugar
taste and mix to your own liking
put in fridge to marinate

A bit of Hidden Valley ranch and some Miracle Whip.

I stay away from precut veggies due to the contamination threat. I just buy a head of cabbage and using a sharp knife and cutting board, make short work of it. Here's my homemade slaw dressing (quite low-fat):

2 cups of Dannon low-fat yogurt drained for 2 hours (I use a #6 coffee filter and metal filter holder)
3 tbs cider vinegar
3 tbs fresh lemon juice
2 tbs honey
1 tbs whole-grain mustard
1 tsp celery seed
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper

Mix ingredients in bowl using a wisk. Pour over cabbage and mix well. Allow to marinate in refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

I don't care for coleslaw, but I wanted to share a little secret with you. I used to work at a "home cooking" type of resturant, famous for it's coleslaw...everyone RAVED about it. Want to know what made all the difference? We made just standard coleslaw, no frills, and then added in a palmful of celery seed.

Hope you can use that tip! :)

I use :

1) purple onions -- for more color
2) Heinz salad cream - i hate mayo
3) black pepper - in place of ordinary pepper
4) add some honey - coz salad cream is a little sour

It tastes best if it is left overnight, just like the coleslaws we have in Kenny Rogers.

KFC coleslaw? Ewww.....
