Tater tot brands?!
Answers: my son is learning to cook and loves tatertot casserole which I never make him(bad mommy I know). The few times I have made it the tater tots were mushy. Is it the brand or cooking time? I never cook tatertots so give me some ideas please.
you probably didn't cook them long enough or you had the temp too low!
I set the over to 400-450 and just bake till they are ALL really golden brown! which takes 30-40 minutes... depending on how big the casserole is. Mine always turn out nice and crunchy and i normally buy whatever is cheaper. :P
try ore ida. they make pretty good ones.
the brand doesn't seem to matter. Mix in half the bag with the soup and meat and if you are adding cheese put it under the top layer of tots. Cook it at 450 for 25 to 30 minutes.
If you buy a cheapo brand then it could be the cause.
Buy Oreida brand and cook at a lower temp for a longer time!
Tater tots? What on earth are they? I'm sorry it's a non answer and I don't usually do them but I reached my half century this year and must confess my ignorance!
If the tater tots are on top, slip it under the broiler for about 10 minutes at the very end to crisp them up. Other wise I believe Ore Ida (spelling) does make the ones in the red bag that are supposed to be crispy when baking.
I use the store brand of tater tots and they come out fine. Since the ground beef is already cooked, make sure to use the heat that is recommended on the package of tater tots which is about 400 degrees if I remember correctly. Too low of a temperature will cause soggy tots.
a child learning to cook needs something to cook besides junk food. Teach him to cook new potatoes with the skins on and other fun potatoes without the grease and poo factor.
Tater Tots are actually a brand name from Ore-Ida so potato rounds are what you look for from other manufacturers.
Likely your problem is with the recipe, not the tots. There are several listed at the link below, you might compare them to your recipe to see if you can't discover the problem.
If you bake them on a cookie tray, it makes them crisp. It's probably the way you're cooking it.
you either didnt have it hot enough or didnt cook long enough i cook til almost burned we love them extra crispy!!
here is a morning breakfast one thats yummy!!

I love tater tots but the only ones I find to be crispy are the ore ida brand. However, If it is in a casserole with sauce it isn't going to be crispy or firm it's gonna mush.
Tater tot casserole is a version of shepherds pie. The tots won't get really crispy. The more juice there is in the dish, the more the tots will steam. Brown your meat and onions first before assembling and drain off the liquid. Bake until top is nice and brown.
I've always used Ore Ida brand.
