It's just a small loaf of bread. Fresh hot bread, though, is nothing short of wonderful.
If you don't want to learn how to make bread, and you don't want to buy a bread machine, just buy a package of frozen dough at the supermarket. Grease a loaf pan, drop a frozen loaf in the pan, let it melt and rise, then pop it in the oven. Last time I looked, most supermarkets carry both Rich's and store-brand frozen dough, and they have both white and wheat varieties.
If you want to learn to make your own, this Amish recipe is something you'll really enjoy. It makes 2 loaves, but believe me, that's not a lot of bread when it's fresh and hot.
1 medium potato, washed, peeled, cut into pieces.
2.5 cups water
1 packet yeast (either active dry or instant will work)
2 tablespoons soft lard
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
6 cups flour.
You can substitute oil for the lard, but you'll end up with a lot softer crust. For the best bread, use a bread flour, because it has more gluten, but all-purpose is OK if that's all you have.
Cook the tater in water until tender. Reserve 1/4 cup water and let it cool to warm (about 105F). Mash the potato in the remaining water, and add water if needed; you need 2.25 cups of potato liquid. Put the yeast in that reserved water, and let it stand 5-10 minutes.
Mix together the potato liquid, lard, sugar and salt, and stir until smooth. Beat in half the flour, then add in the yeast. Add the remaining flour a little bit at a time, beating well. You may need to use more or less flour, depending on the humidity.
On a floured surface, knead the dough about 7 minutes, so it's smooth and elastic. Put the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled (should take about an hour). Punch down the dough, divide into two loaves, and put into greased 8.5"x4.5" loaf pans. Cover, let rise until doubled (should take 30 minutes.)
Bake at 375F for about 40 minutes.
