I am going to be baking a cake for my niece's 5th birthday party, I need frosting for 1/2 sheet cake.?!

Question: Does anyone know a frosting recipe that will cover 1/2 sheet of cake? Or is there a specific place where I can go buy a lot of buttercream? Micheal's doesn't have enough buttercream.

I'm fairly certain you will have plenty with this recipe:

Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened (not margarine)
6-7 cups powdered or confectioner's sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
6-9 Tbsp. milk
2 tsp. vanilla

Preparation:
In large bowl, cream butter until very fluffy. Add part of the sugar and salt and beat again. Continue adding sugar and milk in small batches, alternately, beating until very fluffy. Stir in vanilla. Fill and frost cake.

This delicious frosting can be made into peanut butter frosting by stirring in about 1/2 cup of peanut butter after it's made; or chocolate frosting by beating in 2 squares melted unsweetened chocolate at the very end.

Prep time is about 15 minutes. You should definitely leave the butter out so it is really soft when you go to use it. And I just learned recently that the reason for the pinch of salt is to cut down on how overly sweet such frostings can be and it will enhance the flavor of the vanilla. Best of luck to you! ~HK

***You may need to double or triple this recipe but it least Buttercream

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
1 lb. confectioners' sugar
1/2 c. butter, softened
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 tbsp. milk
Food coloring (optional)
In large bowl, beat together sugar, butter, vanilla and milk until smooth. If necessary add more milk until frosting is spreading consistency. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring. Mix everything well. Chocolate buttercream frosting - add 1/2 cup Hershey's cocoa.

Butter cream can easily be made inexpensively with a box of powdered sugar, stick of butter, and splash of vanilla, & tbsp milk, or so. Color it w/food coloring. You could use blue color for water along the bottom of the cake....maybe find some kind of cute fish to put around like they are "swimming"?

It's expensive, but consider Wilton's whipped frosting. It comes powdered in a box; you add milk and whip for several minutes and you would SWEAR it was whipped cream. SO much better than buttercream with it's heavy greasy mouthfeel. And it's meant to be used for cake decorating so it holds up really well for piping and decorating. You would need a few boxes but it's oh so good. You can buy it in a box at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and some grocery stores.
