I am going to be making a 1/2 sheet birthday cake for my niece who is turning 5. I am going to place a barbie!

Question: in the middle of the cake, and then make her tail come out on the side of her on top of the cake.. any suggestions of what else to put on the cake.. or any ideas her theme is Mermaids. Thanks!

I did a mermaid cake for my daughter for her 6th birthday.

I made a dome shaped cake. My cake pan was from Wilton (their "doll" cake pan) but you could use any ovenproof bowl. The dome thing was frosted gray (a rock), doll pick stuck inside (buy at Joann/Hobby Lobby/Michaels) and the mermaid's tail came down the rock. The Wilton doll cake pan has a picture on the side of the box you can look at even if you don't buy it.

I had blue/white swirled frosting up the side of the base for waves splashing up the rock. A few gummy sharks in the water. Shells, etc on the rock. Shell bra of course. For your cake, you could make the 1/2 sheet cake WITH a dome of some sort at one end, even if it's just piled up cupcakes, stick the doll inside the gray rocks, have the tail going down. Frost most of sheet cake blue/white swirl for water and have a sand area of crushed vanilla wafers on top of white frosting for a beach.

You didn't ask, but we also served jello jigglers cut in fish shapes, colored goldfish crackers, "seaweed juice" (apple juice with a bit of blue foodcolor to make it slightly greenish) and pb&j sandwiches cut in fishy shapes (cookie cutter).

all kinds of gummy fish and gummy flowers

AWW your daughter is so cute. sorry I don't have any suggestions I just had to tell you that

Pink flowers.

frosting sea shells and seaweed. maybe some fish/starfish.

You could use goldfish crackers or those Swedish fish gummies. Take your spatula and make the top of your cake swirly and rough to look like waves. Air brush that blue. There's this edible stuff that looks like clear confetti, I can't think of what it is called. Sprinkle that on top to make your water sparkle. You can get it at a cake decorating store. Take brown sugar and put a pile in the middle of the cake and then brush the sides with it. That is your sand. Put the barbie in the middle of the cake on the sand pile. Either make shells with you shell decorator tip or get shell shaped candy. Make starfish out of icing too.

Oh seaweed like she said above me is a good idea too. you can get some green and blue fruit roll-ups and cut seaweed shapes from that.

We had a mermaid birthday for one of our daughters.

I sprinkled blue powdered gelatin over the white icing for a nice blue ocean (it gave it a different texture, too). I used green colored icing for seaweed and other ocean vegetation. Bright pink and purple icing can be used to make some coral.

The gummy fish is a good idea, too.

Happy Birthday party!

rather than do all that- i reckon paint the top of the cake blue, place a pink frosted donut in the middle and put barbie on top as if on an inner tube. Yay!!!
