Butternut squash can be boiled, which is prolly the most common method, or baked. The boiling will produce a more wet product. You want to cook it until just done.Dont overcook it or you will have soup. Cook till a fork will pierce it easily. Toss in a food processor, for a very young baby, or mash by hand to leave a little texture to it for an older baby. Adjust the thickness of it by adding more of your cooking liquid to loosen it if you need to. You can add anything you'd like to make it sweet or savory. Butter, cinnamon, brown sugar or maple syrup to make it sweet, or a pinch of fresh herb like thyme for a savory taste. Making your own baby food is a great idea when you have the time. Yes, like the potato. Get a nice butternut squash... I peeled mine first and cubed it. The boiled it with no seasonings until it was very tender then blended it into a smooth puree.:) My son loved butternut squash!:)

cut the squash in half and take out all the seedy inside. Put it in a baking pan and bake it at 350 for about 20 minutes. Once it's done, it will be soft like a sweet potato. Then you can scoop it out and smash it up for him to eat. Save the other half for yourself and put some butter and brown sugar on it - yum yum!

The best way to cook winter squash is to bake or roast the squash. You retain the most nutrients while bringing out the most flavour! Roasting or baking winter squash is also easier than tyring to peel and cube for steaming or boiling!

1 acorn or butternut squash

1. Cut acorn or butternut squash in half, scoop out seeds
2. Place halves face down in a pan and cover with an inch of water
3. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 40 minutes or until the “shell/skin” puckers and halves feel soft then scoop squash “meat” out of the shell
4. Place squash "meat" into your choice of appliance for pureeing and begin pureeing.
5. Add water as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.
6. You can also peel the squash, scoop out the seeds and then cut into chunks and boil/steam until tender (like when boiling potatoes for mashed potatoes) then follow steps 4 and 5 - this way is most difficult however and rather time consuming!

This veggie is really hard to peal when raw so just cut it in half, remove the seeds and put it in a baking dish skin and all on 350 degrees and bake until soft (about 25 to 30 minuets). Once they are done, let them cool and scoop out the inside of the squash and put into a blender or food processer until smooth. Your baby will love it!

I made all my son's babyfood. I used a cookbook called 'Mommy Made (and Daddy too!) Home Cooking for a Healthy Baby & Toddler' Easy recipes! I would make a batch of something and then freeze it in ice cub trays. Pop them out, store in zip-lock freezer bags. This way I could take it with me in a little tupperware container.

I loved, loved, loved this book (and so did my son!)
