I can't say for sure, but I do a lot of catered parties and I see the chefs making that delicious crust on the creme brulee' with -- of all things -- a blow torch! But when you think about it it makes sense, it leaves no residue (bad taste or carbon deposit) and you can control where you apply the heat.

I'd give it a try, but practice a little on something first. Remember, a blowtorch (one of those hand held, like the ones used for soldering) is pretty hot, so keep it moving and don't stay in one place too long.

the secret to that is to make your icing as thick as u like and melt it slighty on stovetop

ice the cake as usual saving out about 1/4-1/2 cup of icing. Heat the reserved icing until it is thin. Dribble over the iced cake for a nice look.
