Something gross happened, but is this chicken still safe to eat? (see below)?!
If it were just me eating it, I wouldn't even bother. But I'm taking it to a potluck. No one can get sick can they?
Answers: I got home from the grocery store and I had a million things going on. Well I brought in the groceries and put 2 whole raw chickens on the counter. I had to run and check the laundry and I got distracted. When I got around to putting the chickens away in the fridge, I saw that my cat had jumped onthe counter and peeled the plastic away and was eating on one of the chickens (she only broke about a pea sized hole in the plastic. I know this is gross, but it was a $10 organic chicken and I really hate to throw it out. Is it still safe to eat? I plan to cook it Saturday night for chicken and dumplings. So it will be submersed in boiling water 1 hour the first time, and then I will debone it and it will boil again for another 1-2 hours while I make the dumplings.

If you're wondering if your cat may have transmitted a communicable disease to the chicken, the answer is "no". That is, assuming you thoroughly cook the chicken. Any viruses or bacteria from kitty's mouth will be eliminated by cooking.
The other consideration, of course, is how long did the chicken remain on the counter (at room temperature)? The way you describe it, it was just a matter of a few minutes. In that case, there's no danger of illness.
If the chicken had sat out for a matter of hours, you'd have to be concerned with toxins that can be left behind by food-borne bacteria. Cooking will certainly kill the bacteria, but the toxins (waste products) they leave behind can still cause illness; cooking doesn't eliminate them.
it's fine especially after being boiled
If it really bothers you just cut the spot out, but it should be ok to eat. Wash it though!
well, I hope I am not going to that potluck, anyway...if you really want to keep it try to carve out the part where your cat in contact with and boil it now, not in 2 days. I would personally toss it, ever heard of toxoplasmosis?
it will be fine just cut away the eaten part and wash it good dont worry ,,,
I would totally eat it!! I am making chicken and dumplings for supper right now :)
My cats have done the same thing, I just wash it really well since the cat could have litter on her paws and who knows what she touched on the chicken with her paws, but seriously, it'll be great, no worries. Good luck and God bless!!
