There are actually a number of ways to roast garlic, and I have done them all - they all work great, it just depends on your preference of the heat source...
* Take an entire bulb &, leaving it intact, cut off just the tips of all the tops. Drizzle olive oil over the top and you can even sprinkle some salt, pepper & herbs over the top.
* Now you can wrap in foil and toss onto the grill - about 30 minutes but it depends on how hot your grill is & what rack you place it on.
* You can place the bulb(s) on a baking sheet (or wrapped in foil) & roast in the oven at 400 for about 30-45 minutes.

OR

* You can take individual cloves - leave the skin on - & cut off just the root end to each one.
* Place in a pan with just a bit of olive oil (and herbs if you'd like) & put the lid to the pan on & shake them around. You want just a touch of olive oil to coat all the cloves.
* Leaving the lid on, roast on the stovetop at the lowest heat, for about 30 minutes. Toss the cloves around occasionally to roast evenly.

What you are looking for with any of these methods is to get the garlic to a golden, soft, nutty consistency. Sometimes the papery skin will start to burn a little & that's okay. Just make sure the garlic inside isn't burning or it will end up tasting bitter. The reason you cut off the ends is because when the garlic is roasted correctly, you will be able to just take a clove & squish out the inside.

If you roast them in the oven, probably 350 for 15 minutes or so, they should be spreadable like cheese. I've seen it done on TV. Be sure to peel them first.

You need to roast the garlic in the oven. First peel the garlic then wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in the oven on 350 until it's soft.

Drizzle with olive oil, put into a covered container, a garlic roaster if you have one and roast for about 15 -20 minutes. The garlic will be paste like and will have lost its hot garlic taste. It is very good .
