How to melt chocolate without a double boiler?!
thanks.
Answers: i need to melt some chocolate to make chocolate covered pretzels. what's the best method to do that? i do not have a double boiler... but i do have a saucepan. would it work if i melted it over the stove in a saucepan? or should i melt the chocolate in the microwave?
thanks.
Easy. Just put a heat-safe bowl over the saucepan. Instant double boiler!
I've never owned a double boiler, but this is the trick I always used.
Do it in a saucepan over very low heat and add about one tablespoon of a flavorless oil (like canola or salad oil) to every cup of chocolate.
If you have a thermometer, the chocolate should be about 80 degrees F.
Hope this helps.
p.s.: I would not reccommend doing it in the microwave, it could melt it evenly, but it has a greater chance of scorching.
I've used a glass dish in the microwave before and it worked well.
You can melt it in the microwave or if you have a bigger saucepan you can put some water in it and put your smaller saucepan inside the bigger one.
the best way to melt chocolate without a double boiler is to use a sauce pan with some water in in and then put your chocolate into a glass bowl on top of the sauce pan, your own homemade double boiler. you can also use a metal bowl or another sauce pan, just so your chocolate is suspended above the hot water. I've done this many times and it works great, you just get a little steamier than a real double boiler and you have to be careful that none of the water gets into your chocolate. This is the best way, because melting chocolate in the microwave interferes with its tempering and won't be as nice.
Have fun!
Hi
Half fill a pan with water and put a glass bowl inside the pan.
put your chocolate into the glass bowl as the water heats up it will melt your chocolate keep stirring your chocolate so it dose not burn.
Hope this helps

put chocolate in a freezer bag and seal then drop it in a pot of warm water (simmer) turn off and let sit until the chocolate is melted pull out the bag snip the end of the bag and let the chocolate pour into a bowl and throw away the bag and no mess good luck!!!!!
Either do it in the microwave, on low power. Or with a bit of oil, or water in the pan. I have one recipe for a chocolate cake that calls for the chocolate to be melted in water in a regular sauce pan, works just fine.
