How do I make a soft fluffy baked potato?!

Question: I always cook them at 350 degrees for an hour but they don't come out soft, they are dry and not fluffy :(

I have tried cooking them for 200 degrees for three hours (read that online) and they are still the same.

Does it make a difference that I always bake at least 3 at the same time?

A good baked potato is as much about luck as good planning - which is probably why your on-line recipe didn't work... As often as not, you just chuck them in the oven without a second thought and they come out perfect: the baked tatty from heaven! Another day you can get the correct 'floury' variety, bake it with a little sea salt in a hot oven and serve it within seconds of it leaving the oven and yet it still won't be right! You can follow all the rules and yet food sometimes does its own thing. In this case a skin that is unwilling to crisp up nicely and flesh that refuses to turn to froth. Sometimes you just have to cross your fingers. However, usually, to get a fluffy baked potato I use varieties such as King Edward, Maris Piper, Wilja, Ailsa and Golden Wonder . Three hours seems to be fine, however . The longer you heat the potato - the softer and tougher its skin will go. So good luck!!

bake in oven!!

It doesn't make a diffrence about the amout of potatoes in the oven. Try cooking them lower than that.

Not sure but before baking make sure u rub some oil on them and then wrap with aluminum foil..this usually does the trick in my family...I usually put the oven on 325-350 on middle rack..=)

Cook in the microwave in a pie dish with a little bit of water, be sure to rotate them half way thru...yummy

For the softest, fluffies baked potato this is what I do...

I boil my potato for 10 - 12 minutes, then I bake it at 400 degrees wrapped in foil for 30 minutes.

It comes out perfect everytime!

wrap it in tin fiol

stick it in the microwave...

also, it may be the type of potato you are using... try the bigger potatoes... they are softer and fluffier...

Steam them for 20 minutes (for a medium sized potato), then bake them for about 10 to 15 minutes. Make certain you poke plenty of holes in them (a couple of dozen) before steaming.

Get butter and morton salt and rub it all over the potato then pour the salt on top of the side you will cut open . wrap it in foil then bake at 350 for 45 minutes to and hour, whan you open it the patato will be fluffy.

Buy better potatoes, Russets are usu good. Also wrap them in foil for cooking, this prevents drying them out.

put some butter or margerine on them before you wrap them in foil,350 is a good temp for them.

the problem with baked potatoes is that it takes so long to cook. Sometimes I'll just put in a baked potato even if I don't want one because by the time it's done...who knows!

1 1/2 to 2 hours at 200 degrees should be fine. Make sure you pierce the potato skin first (try running your knife all the way around the outside) and rub it with oil before putting it in the oven.

Go to a kitchen store and ask for potato nails! They are aluminum nails that you put through the potato. Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, so the potato cooks from the inside while it is cooking from the outside.

They are cheap.

Bake at #75 for 45 min to an hour.

Good luck!

easiest way to make a good baked potato is

1. wash and poke a few sets of holes with a fork
2. wrap in a wet paper towel
3. microwave about 10 min. for medium size

doesn't matter how many you bake in a oven unless the size various..350 for 45 Min's..then check them..Another way of cooking baked potatoes are in the microwave..One at a time ..poke holes in potatoes with a fork wrap them up in a paper towel and depending on size say for a large but not huge cook for 6 Min's on one side and then roll it over and cook for another 6 Min's..smaller ones you put in for 4 on each side

I have started doing potatoes in the microwave. Scrub potatoes, & pierce each one several times with a fork to "vent" it. (This probably goes without saying, but do NOT wrap in foil or anything--just place on microwave-safe dish or bowl.) My microwave has a setting button for potato and you can do up to 3 at a time.....check your owner's manual or do it by weight. It takes about 8-10 min for 3 medium potatoes. Once they start to get soft, I cut them open and put in butter and seasoning, then pop back in microwave to melt butter and finish them off. You can also add cheese or other warm toppings at this point, but save sour cream until you take them out.

Idaho pototos come out the best baked. Wash them good and poke a couple of holes in each to let the steam escape. Bake 375 degrees for about an hour. Some pototos aren't good for baking and the microwaved ones come out like they are steamed.

The most important thing is to use the right variety of potato - in the UK I'd use a King Edward as they are large and very floury. You dont want any sort of waxy or new potato.

Rub a little salt on the skin before baking, this will help draw out some of the moisture making them fluffier. Then prick the skin or the potato will explode. Also when they come out of the oven, give then a whack with the edge of your hand ( wear an ovenglove ) this helps fluff up the insides.

Putting more than one potato in the oven at a time makes no difference.

Do what Solo does.

I always nuke mine for 5 minutes in the microwave ( a tad longer if they are huge) just make sure you prick then first they have a tendency to explode.
Pop them in a low over (GM3) for 2 hrs or so until the outside is crispy and a knife comes out clean when poked into it.
Hey presto crispy on outside and fluffy on inside.

depending on size boil 20/30 mins, put in foil with butter /oil,if you like `crisp` skin open foil and give 5.10 mins at high when cooked.

Use a Russet Potato. Scrub your potato REALLY well. Pierce the potatoes several times with a knife or fork. Rub it with olive oil and season salt. (The olive oil rub is what you are probably lacking for a softer potato). Fold it up tightly with alum. foil and turn up the ends so no steam will seep out. Bake as high as 400. I bake at 375 for about an hour.

I saw something on the Food Network that suggested spreading a layer of salt on a cooking pan and setting the potato on top of it, cut side down. The layer of salt is supposed to be about a 1/4 of an inch or thicker, enough to insulate the moisture the potato will release when it cooks, thus keeping the moisture circulating inside, giving you a soft and moist potato. I don't know if every detail is correct, but I know it's something close to this description. Check out the Food Network website.

You can make baked potatoes in microwave. Just wet baked potato and place in plastic sandwich bag for 8 min. Your baked potato will be so moist and delicious. The skin will come off the potato, top it with butter, salt. Loaded potatoes are good too. Just and the sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese, bacon. You can get the bacon in the salad dressing isle. Its already cooked and crumbled. Yummy !

We love baked potatos and have tried many different ways of baking.

The easiest, fastest, cheapest and most successful way that we have tried and continuously doing :

- Choose 1 good big potato (example: russel)
- Wash & Clean
- Use fork or tip of knife to poke the potato evenly all over (i.e. to make small holes and let heat to distribute evenly).
- Put on a plate (that can be used in Microwave oven)
- Cook in Microwave Oven for 7 minutes on High. If you want to bake 3 potatoes, cook for 10 minutes.
- Take out and cut half of the top part like an "X"
- Press the sides to let the fluffy and hot contents come out (it looks like a professional restauranteur's serving).

- Then, garnish or put the topping to your liking. We normally use butter or sour cream or cheese or coleslaw ..... whatever you like

Hmmm.... It is yummy and delicious!
Faster and healthier than instant noodle.

Bon apetit !!!
