Question: do you have to cook a pumpkin shell if you are putting food inside of it? I am serving dessert in a hallow pumpkin shell, is this safe?

If you were to cook it, the flesh would be soft and scoop-able, making cooked pumpkin.

Here is a recipe for Pecan Pie in Pumpkin Shells and the pumpkins are to filled and then cook the whole lot. See:

i never seen that one.your not going to cook the food in it are you . line it with foil or saran wrap!!! then put food in . please don't cook the food in it!!!wheres the party i want to see it!!!!

Heat the pumpkin shell in a 200oF oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

It would help to know what the dessert is but, generally--if you bake a pumpkin, there is a fine line between it staying somewhat firm and it collapsing as baking it softens it.

I can tell you that I have served baked entree's in pumpkins
as well as chilled and hot soups such as squash and carrot soup, pumpkin soup and Curried Cream of Butternut soup in small pumpkins.

I don't believe lining a shell with saran or foil will be useful because each time someone uses a utensil to serve themselves, it will most likely get caught on the lining.
