What is a good substitute for mayo in sandwiches, etc?!

Question: I've noticed many recipes online and in cookbooks that call for mayo as a condiment. But what is a good alternative for someone who hates the taste and texture? Does it depend on the dish in question?

butter!

Thousand Island dressing, ranch.

my mom haes mayo so she uses a whiped butter

the whip, mustard, nothing,

hmmmmmmmm try honey..might work

a natural method is to you a ripened avocado as your spread...it's got natural "good" cholesterol. (at for sandwiches).

I don't know a good subsitute for salads.

It depends. You could use mustard or ranch dressing.

Mustard.

I loathe mayo in anything except a potato salad or macaroni salad.

Miracle Whip is just a little more tolerable to me.

I have heard of people using raw egg whites as well.

Cream Cheese
Hummus
Pub Cheese (or any spread cheese with garlic and herbs)
Veggie dip
Use cranberry sauce on your turkey sandwich - mmmmm mmmmm good

Any kind of salad dressing

Thousand Island Dressing, or any mayo based dressing.

I would try hummus, or a mixture of some yogurt with mustard and some olive oil whipped in... Hope this helps!!! Dry sandwiches are not so yummy! :)

it depends on the food, but I always use mustard with just a tiny bit of fat free mayo/miracle whip for things like potato salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. Mustard has more flavor and is far better for you.

Ah, salad dressing.

I also hate mayo and miracle whip. I use Italian dressing. Less fat and better texture.

Horse-radish sauce, despite it's ridiculous name, actually tastes great as a substitute for mayo.

plain yogurt
plain yogurt + dijon mustard
plain yogurt + garlic
plain yogurt + little bit of creamy dressing

veganaisse! Seriously, the best stuff ever... ( I hate Mayo.)

Not many people have heard of it, but if you have a "Ms.Greens" near you, I bet you could find it there :D

low fat cream cheese is the best! :)
or taziki dip

Olive Oil and Vinegar is good for sandwiches

Plain, non-fat, unflavored yogurt. It's really good.

Tofu "Mayo"

2 tsp. fresh chopped garlic
4 oz. soft tofu cake
1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
salt to taste
In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Place in a jar and refrigerate.

sour cream you can just add some oil if the mayo is for moisture or sour cream if it's also for "zip." also sometimes substituted a combo of mustard and sour cream or cream cheese honey...

Mustard

Yes - it depends on what you are making.

Here are some ideas:

1) sour cream

2) yogurt - drain it for a few hours in a coffee filter to make it thicker

3) Best Food Dijonaise

4) Plain low-fat yogurt combined with low-fat cottage cheese. (I'd pulse it in a food processor 2 -3 times.)

5) Healthy Mayonnaise Substitute

1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup cold water
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon prepared horseradish

Directions:
1. Place the cornstarch in a small saucepan, whisk in the cold water, and set the pan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil for 1 to 2 minutes or until the mixture is clear. Remove from the heat and transfer to a small bowl.

2. Whisk in the olive oil, vinegar, yogurt, mustard, and horseradish. Store tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

If you wish, add a tablespoon of low-sodium ketchup and a dash of hot sauce.

Makes about 1 cup.
