At least 4 minutes. Use the highest speed on the mixer as well. the more air you incorprate, the higher the cake will rise and the more tender it will be.

Muffins you beat as little as possible with a wooden spoon because you only want to blend muffins, you want to whip cake to make it light.
At least thats what I learned in culinary school.

As little as possible, your cake will be moister when it's beaten less. I never beat it as long as they say to. Little lumps in the batter is normal, they will cook out.

in till all lumps are out .

My cake mix box says 2 mins.

3-4 minutes, maximum. About halfway through, you should take a minute and scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to make certain that the dry ingredients are all incorporated. Once you have done that continue on for another minute or so until the batter is fully mixed (no dry ingredients showing) and all the lumps are out.
